Burgundy 2012 – First impressions

On my March trip to Burgundy I had the opportunity to taste quite a few wines from the 2012 vintage – and here are my first impressions of the 2012 vintage.

A word of warning – it’s still very early to evaluate the quality and characteristics of the 2012 vintage – and my sample of 2012s is still quite limited – so this is only initial impressions of the vintage.

Impressions – Red Burgundy 2012

The overall impressions of the 2012s reds are very positive. The wines are quite rich and fullbodied with a wonderful vibrant and intense fruit – nuanced and complex expression of fruit. The 2012s are quite transparent and nervy despite the quite intense fruit – the acidity is quite crisp and offer fine support for the rich fruit.

They are bigger and more dense than the 2011s, they offer better balance, transparancy and freshness than the 2009s – but seems to be lacking some of the focus and intensity found in the 2010 vintage.

Bottom line: The red 2012s show a remarkable and impressive balance between rich fruit and transparancy. They are quite rich – but still offer true Burgundian style with a clear expression of the terroir.

Impressions – White Burgundy 2012

The overall impression of the 2012s whites is quite positive. The whites are also quite rich and even somewhat dense. The fruit seems fine and pure, but slightly on the dense side – lacking a bit of freshness compared to 2011 and 2010.

Bottom line: It’s too early to make a firm evaluation of the white 2012s – the fruit and weight is there, but will they also offer freshness and nerve – time will show.
