La Romanee 2012 is slightly closed compared to the initial cask samples – but still a gorgeous and very intense wine. In the bouquet layers of juicy fruit – notes of raspberries, cherries, violets and peony rose – accentuated and infused by a very refined and powerful minerality. On the palate layers of juicy, rich and intense red fruit. The fruit is vibrant and airy with a lot of energy – supported by ample ripe tannins and by the multidimensional minerality of this great terroir. The finish is very long and persistant with a fantastic display of minerality. Its a intense wine but still effortlessly refined and delicate. An extraordinary and gorgeous wine in the making.
La Romanee 2012 is gorgeous and very intense wine. In the bouquet layers of very intense fruit – notes of strawberries, cherries, violets and peony rose – brought forward by a very refined and powerful minerality. On the palate layers of juicy, rich and intense fruit – truly lovely inner energy in the fruit. The fruit is balanced by and brought forward by the fantastic vibrant and multidimensional minerality of this great terroir. The intensity of this wine is at another level than most other Grand Crus, but still it’s refined, elegant, balanced and even delicate. A truly extraordinary wine in the making.
La Romanee 2007 is big step up from Aux Reignots and Echezeaux. The nose is slightly closed but very intense and mineral driven with red and black fruit aromas, peony rose, violets and asian spices. On the palate layers of intense sweet – but cool – pinot fruit perfectly supported by the intense multidimensional minerality of this great terroir. The finish is long and intense with a lovely vibrant minerality. A very focused and refined effort – very impressive for the vintage.
La Romanee 2011 is a very impressive and gorgeous expression of Vosne terroir. The bouquet is intense and refined with cool red berry fruit – complex spicy aromas with notes of violets, pomegranate and rose petals – and last but least layers of filligree mineralty. On the palate intense medium-bodied vibrant fruit focused by the powerful and very refined minerality and the finely grained delicate tannins. The energy and tension in this wine is impressive, as is the long intensely mineralic finish. The balance and length is truly outstanding – but the poise and refinement is even more impressive. A breathtaking display of terroir!
The La Romanee 2002 is a very special wine, as it’s the first vintage of this great vineyard made under the management of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair. And what a debut on the big scene of the Grand Cru’s. In the bouquet lovely red and darker fruits, strawberries and forest berries perfumed with cherries, violets, rose petals and sous bois. Very complex and refined with a almost royal serenity and balance. On the palate very focused with lovely quite matured red fruit and a astonishing minerality and length. Intense but still very delicate and harmonious. A almost breathtaking long finish with layers of minerality interlinked with delicate pinot fruit. A spiritual pleasure – need 10 years more to reach a level of full maturity … and will most likely keep for several decades. The rating is perhaps slightly on the high side … but love the 2002 fruit displayed on a great terroir.
La Romanee 2011 is a very intense wine. In the bouquet very intense fruit aromas, with notes of strawberries, cherries, violets and peony rose. On the palate layers of lush and intense fruit balanced by the excellent structure and minerality. The intensity of this wine is at another level than most other Grand Cru, but still it’s refined, elegant and balanced. Exceptional length (from Vosne to Beune) a truly extraordinary wine.
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair is one of the very top domaines in Burgundy, and the 2011 vintage seem to consolidate this position.
I tasted all the 2011 wines from cask at the domaine in early May 2012. The tasting showed that Liger-Belair have made very fine wines in 2011, and will in my view, judged on this early stage, outperform most other producers in this vintage.
In general all the 2011 wines from Liger Belair are very balanced with a fine delicate pinot fruit, a good freshness and acidity to match the fruit. The fruit is at the moment quite complex and nervy, with a good energy. The wines are quite transparent with a very good expression of the terroir.
The 2011 vintage can’t match the outstanding 2010’s from this domaine, but they are indeed very fine and will provide a lot of pleasure for those who love terroir driven red Burgundy.
The 2005 La Romanee from Liger-Belair is one of the very best wines I have tasted. Still very young, but surprisingly accessible. In the bouquet multible layers of ripe red and darker fruit raspberries, dark cherries – sweet Vosne spices and licorice. Very powerfull yet also delicate and refined, with the fantastic terroir and minerality present in the nose. On the palate also powerfull with refined cool, ripe quite lush fruit, a very fine acidity and a exceptional minirality. It’s a monumental wine, but still fresh, delicate and vibrant. Truly a legendary wine.

The year 2011 has been a fine wine year. First and foremost winehog.org went live in July, after the idea was born in late May 2011.
It’s been a busy year with the winehog blog, but also a lot of fun. A lot of good wines were reviewed during the second half of 2011, and a few articles were posted. Thanks for the support and feedback via Twitter and Facebook.
Best wine of 2011 was Liger-Belair La Romanee 2005 tasted back in July (tasting note pending) an extraordinary wine … with legend potential.
Cheers – And from all of me to all of you – Happy New Year!
La Romanee 2010 is a huge wine. Balanced with a super structure. Quite dark and dense at the moment, but shows a lot of finesse and a wonderful minerality. Not quite on the same level as the fantastic 2005 La Romanee from Liger-Belair. Exceptional length a truly extraordinary wine.
