On June 28th Burgundy was again hit by a serious hailstorm. It’s still difficult to evaluatete and assess the damage in the Burgundian vineyards after the terrible hailstorm – but here is a short overview.
The level of damage show great variation between the appellations and even within the same vineyard there could be a big difference in the levels of damage.
I have tried to gather information from different sources to make a damage report after the hailstorm. Please note these are indications and NOT exact numbers for the losses endured by the wine growers.
Damage report
The table below show the estimated loss of grapes in the different appellations.
- Pommard: 60 – 90%
- Volnay: 50 – 80%
- Beaune: 15 – 100%
- Corton: 30 – 50%
- Meursault: 10 – 20%, up to 80% for some premiers crus
- Puligny-Montrachet: 1er crus 30 – 40%, grands crus 20%
- Chassagne-Montrachet: 5 – 10%
- Vosne-Romanee/Flagey Echezeaux: 10 – 20%
- Chambolle: Between 10 – 20%
- Clos de Vougeot: 20%
Worst damage in Cote de Beaune
The worst damage is in Pommard, Volnay and Beaune where the harvest on some vineyards is more or less destroyed completely by the hailstorm.
Pommard Pézerolles suffered a 80 – 100% loss of grapes … see the picture below.
The damage in the Beaune appellation seem to be very bad in some areas – the picture below show Beaune 1er cru les Boucherottes one day after the hailstorm.
More limited damage in Cote de Nuits
Cote de Nuits was also affected by the hailstorm, but the damages seem more limited.
First reports from Arnoux-Lachaux says that around 10% to 25% of the grapes are lost in vineyards like Clos de Vougeot and Romanee-Saint-Vivant.
