Let me be clear: Wine is about hedonism and joy, and it is always timely and appropriate to open a vin d’émotion.
The prices of some wines are astronomical, but it is rarely the fault of the winegrower, who often gets less than 20% of the inflated grey-market price.
What! How can you open … ?
Wine prices – and money in general – are (for me) putting the focus on the wrong place. I focus on what I paid for the bottle originally, not what it’s worth now. If I bought it, it must have been affordable at the time.
I drink it when I want, and see its current monetary value only as reassurance that I bought something valued. As for the current, possibly inflated, market value – I DON’T CARE!!
A focus on prices will ruin the wine hobby as we know it, and with this, the joy of wine. Choose what from you have – and from you want in the glass – based on pure hedonism.
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Aux Reignots 2015
As predicted – or just by pure luck – the Liger-Belair Reignots has unfolded beautifully, like many other 2015s. The fruit is becoming livelier, organic, and openly hedonistic. The energy and acidity – the freshness – have resurfaced, and make this wine sensual and delicate. The bouquet is tantalizing my nose with lilacs and white roses, as well as an ever-so-slight reduction (if you even know it’s there). This is an explosion of fruit, yet also elegant and hedonistic. A true vin d’émotion which, yes please, we need from time to time.
(Drink from 2032) – Outstanding – (95-96p) – 28/05/2022
