Chassagne-Montrachet – the vineyard articles

The terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet

Chassagne is a large and quite prominent appellation, with three white Grand Crus and some very fine 1er crus. Only half of Montrachet and Batard Montrachet are located in Chassagne-Montrachet – the rest is in the Puligny-Montrachet appellation.

    • The creation of Bienvenues
While Burgundy is a very old, historic area, not all is what it seems regarding its wines and appellations. The Montrachet area – with Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and the more recent Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet – was actually formalized in the period 1920-1939 when the appellations were all settled and fixed. That is quite recent …. on ...

    • Terroir Insight: Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne Blanchot Dessus
Montrachet is a legendary vineyard, and while its boundaries have been fixed since 1921, some neighbouring plots and parcels are more closely related to it than others. Thibault Morey has three plots located very close to the promised land. The first is his Batard-Montrachet, located a wall- and road-width below Domaine Leflaive’s holding in the mythical ...
    • Terroir Insight: Domaine Morey-Coffinet Chassagne Dent de Chien
Montrachet is a legendary vineyard, and while its boundaries have been defined since 1921, some neighbouring plots and parcels are more closely related to it than others. Thibault Morey has two – no, three – plots located very close to the promised land. One is in Chassagne-Montrachet Les Blanchots Dessus, just a few meters south of ...
    • Red Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles ? or a red Les Caillerets?
Some of the famours and best terroirs producing our beloved white Burgundies have actually produced red wines if one goes some decades or a century back. Gradually the production of red wines in the Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet appellations have been reduced, as Pinot Noir vines have been replaced by Chardonnay. Some of this development was perhaps initiated ...
    • Montrachet – the historic evidence and the expansion in 1921
If one look at the old sources the area and borders of the Montrachet vineyard were not very clear and well defined, and it was not until 1921 Montrachet found it’s current size and borders. The current size of Montrachet is 7.998 ha divided almost equally between Chassagne-Montrachet (3.9873 ha) and (4.0107 ha) in the Puligny-Montrachet ...
    • Terroir Insight: Ramonet Chassagene-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret
There is a new wine in the Domaine Ramonet portfolio in the 2014 vintage – Chassagne-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret – not to be confused with the Les Caillerets also coming from the Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets vineyard. So lets take a closer look at this new cuvée. Chassagne-Montrachet Les Caillerets – one appellation four or five vineyards The Chassagne ...
    • Terroir Insight: d’Auvenay Criots-Batard-Montrachet
One of the most elusive wines from Burgundy is the Criots-Batard-Montrachet from Domaine d’Auvenay. While the name Leroy rings a lot of bells in most Burgundy lovers ears, Domaine d’Auvenay is a bit below the radar of many collectors – mainly due to the exclusivity of the wines – they are indeed very rare and often ...
    • Clos Saint-Jean … the red Grand Cru of Chassagne-Montrachet?
I have always enjoyed a good glass of red Chassagne as they often offer a very lively and vibrant expression of pinot noir.  Often have I been drinking these wines for mere pleasure and without analyzing the wines and taking a closer look at why I adore these somewhat overlooked beauties. Chassagne-Montrachet Clos Saint-Jean – Photo: Google ...
    • Once Mont Rachet now Blanchot .. the unknown neighbour!
The vineyard Blanchot Dessus is located just south of Le Montrachet – the Chassagne part of the legendary Grand Cru Montrachet. Blanchots Dessus seen from south Blanchot Dessus is a small and relatively unknown vineyard with few owners – somewhat overlooked compared to its more famours nighbours Montrachet and Criots-Batard Montrachet. But what is the history of this ...
    • Terroir Insight: Hubert Lamy Criots-Batard-Montrachet
One of the most intriguing and unique wines in Burgundy is the Criots-Batard-Montrachet from Domaine Hubert Lamy. It’s made by the innovative and very dedicated Olivier Lamy, from a small plot with 24.000 vines per hectare .. and is in my view a quite spectacular wine .. and most certainly worth a terroir insight. So lets go ...
