Visit Heresztyn-Mazzini – tasting of the 2015 vintage

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini is a relatively new name in Gevrey-Chambertin, but the origin of the estate is the old Heresztyn domaine.

Florence Heresztyn and her husband Simon Mazzini – who originates from Champagne – have made great improvements since they took over in 2012 – and a now making some very refined and delicate Gevrey’s.

I must admit that I perhaps have neglected Gevrey-Chambertin a bit on my trips to Burgundy, and I was therefore delighted to have the opportunity to taste the 2014s and 2015s at Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini.

The Gevrey styles

I tasted a lot of Gevreys in the 1990s but got tired of the somewhat extracted style produced by some of the hyped estates back then.

It’s easy to enjoy a good Rousseau and Trapet has really improved over the last years, so the more traditional growers are in great form.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini has taken another route producing wines with a significant percentage of whole cluster grapes, light extraction and relatively low SO2. The result is some beautifully refined and transparent Gevrey’s – expressive and complex. 

I must say I was very pleased indeed when I tasted the 2014s .. and the 2015s are even better – these are beautiful and very enjoyable wines.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini – not only Gevrey

Florence and Simon has taken over the vineyards from Florence parents to form a new Domaine. Domaine Heresztyn is still there, but is no longer producing wines – the do however still sell wines from the cellar – please note first vintage of Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini is 2012.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini produces a Bourgogne Rouge and a Bourgogne Blanc – a range of Gevreys including three different village wines, three Gevrey 1er crus – and then a Chambolle village, a Morey 1er cru and finally Clos Saint Denis.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Bourgogne Rouge 2015

The Bourgogne Rouge 2015 is showing lovely fruit and concentration for this level – a juicy wine with a fine display of Bourgogne character. The nose is offering fine and pure red fruits, a hint of minerality, quite forward and expressive. On the palate rich and weighty for this level offering plenty of juicy fruit … no whole cluster in this wine. A very enjoyable Bourgogne Rouge.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Songes 2015

The Gevrey village Les Songes is from the vinyards in the northern end of the Gevrey appellation – En Songe (near the cemetery) and Les Gueulepines (in Brochon). The vines are old – planted between 1926 and 1952. The nose offer beautiful juicy red fruit – expressive and charming reflecting the 50% whole cluster used. On the palate very juicy and fruity – it’s transparent and refined with airy red fruit. A adorable Gevrey village in the making … really enjoyed this wine.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Les Jouises 2015

The Gevrey Les Jouises is made from village vineyards located mainly south of the Gevrey village i.e. towards the grand cru vineyards. It’s comes from the following vineyards: Jouise and Fourneau – also old wines planted between 1950 and 1955. The nose is very expressive offering red fruits spiced with cinnamon and a earthy minerality – quite floral. On the palate refined and juicy for this level .. very generous and airy .. just so enjoyable.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Village 2015

This village is produced from a plot just behind the Heresztyn-Mazzini estate. The vines are planted in 1960 and in this cuvee 50% whole cluster grapes is used. The nose is very expressive here .. sweet red fruit .. juicy and airy .. spiced with cinnamon and all spice. On the palate rich almost silky – very generous and elegant for a village Gevrey. A very charming and complex wine. Hard to pick a favorite among the village wines – but think this is it in the 2015 vintage at least.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Chambolle-Musigny 2015

The Chambolle-Musigny village is very expressive and forward – 50% whole cluster. The plots are located in Aux Echanges (below the village) and Les Bas Doix (below Les Haut Doix in the southern end of the appellation). The nose offer juicy red fruit and a nice Chambolle Minerality. On the palate rich fruit .. very vibrant and energetic .. with a fine transparency. A delightful Chambolle village .. the house style and the light hand in the vinification works well on a Chambolle terroir.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin La Perriere 2015

Moving up to 1er cru La Perriere offer more intensity and weight – it’s however also a bit darker and less expressive than the other wines. La Perriere is located below Mazis-Chambertin just south of the village – the vines are from 1982 – 50% whole cluster is used. The nose offer red and dark berry fruit – a bit serious and understated. On the palate refined and well structured with a slightly darker balance than the other wines. A lovely wine in the making

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Le Goulots 2015

Les Goulots is more forward and generous than La Perriere. The vineyard is located just north of Combe Aux Moines in the northern end of Gevrey. The vines are relatively young on this plot – planted in 1981. The nose is offering a nice selection of red berries and a nice floral minerality .. high proportion of white marl and limestone. On the palate juicy and energetic with a lovely generous sweetness. It’s a very enjoyable wine …

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Gevrey-Chambertin Champonnet 2015

The 1er cru Champonnet (vineyard is located just above Fonteny) is a truly gorgeous wine. Vines are planted in 1972 – so quite old. The nose is bursting with layers of red berry fruit – very expressive and filigree. On the palate very generous indeed – airy with 65% whole cluster used for this cuvee. Love the juicy mid-palate fruit and the very refined but also expressive style of this wine. My favorite of the 1er crus although I like them all – a gorgeous wine.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes 2015

The Morey-Saint-Denis Les Millandes (vineyard located below Clos de la Roche) is also a lovely wine. The nose is offering airy red fruit – floral and expressive (50% whole cluster) with a refined minerality from the terroir. On the palate very rich – yet still vibrant and energetic offering juicy mid-palate fruit – fine length.

Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, Clos Saint-Denis 2015

The Clos Saint-Denis is a big step up in quality offering more refinement and depth. In the nose layers of juicy and vibrant red fruit – notes of pomegranate, boysen berries and forest strawberries – brought forward by the intense and filigree minerality. On the palate intense fruit focused by the refined minerality – it’s rich and generous, focused and intense – long and refined. I have a soft spot for Clos Saint-Denis … and this is an outstanding example.

Summing up the 2015s from Heresztyn-Mazzini

I really enjoyed to taste the wines at Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini. They are made with a light hand – they are forward, transparent and enjoyable – yet they have all the complexity and intensity one could want from the individual appellations.

The 2015s are magnificent .. and it underlines that the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation did very well in 2015. I highly recommend that you try the wines from Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini.
