Charles Lachaux of Vosne-Romanée’s Domaine Arnoux-Lachaux is continuing to develop his viticulture.
Here are some photos of the new tractor and process he uses to control vegetation growth in the rows.

Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Procès
NSG Les Procès is a 1er cru located above the village of Nuits, just below the beautiful Chateau Gris.
The Arnoux-Lachaux plot is 0.6337 hectare, and the vines are on average 65 years old.
I visit the vineyard almost weekly, as it is a beautiful walk from my place in Nuits-Saint-Georges. This gives me the chance to follow its progress.
The advanced tractor
The tractor is constructed to pinch and bend the grass in the rows of the vineyard. Underneath the tractor, mechanical arms ensure the handling of the grass within the row itself, while behind it, two rollers pinch the grass. The idea is that the grass is not cut, but pinched and bent. Hence its growth is constrained, as opposed to cutting it, which would induce growth.
The purpose is to leave natural, bio-diverse vegetation in the rows that’s balanced so the grass does not sap too much energy from the vines.
