Time to be generous!
This month, Sotheby’s is facilitating an online charity auction of wines from a special Burgundy cuvee: Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2020 – Cuvée de l’Abbaye de Cîteaux.
The funds raised through the auction will be used to finance the thorough – and important – ongoing restoration of the Cistercian Abbey de Cîteaux, the historic home of the monks who first worked the clos.
The auction can be found here, and ends on April 23.
Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2020, Cuvée de l’Abbaye de Cîteaux
Released for the first time since 1997, this cuvée has been produced thanks to donations from 24 domaines in the Clos de Vougeot appellation. The fruit of this remarkable collaboration resulted in a rare blend of two barrels, which will be bottled in various formats from August 2022 and available after the harvest. This auction is the only place where these exceptional bottles will be available.
Each of the Cuvée de l’Abbaye de Cîteaux lots (lots 1-113) will be packed in a specially prepared presentation box produced by Les Ateliers de Langalerie and specially commissioned for this sale. The exterior is composed of fine-grained first-quality oak, the hinged lid finished with marquetry and featuring, inlaid in brass, the outline of the door of the abbey’s Définitoire building. The logo is applied by silk screening and the box is protected by a plain cardboard outer cover.
The unique label has been produced by professional illuminators as per the Cistercian tradition. The original Romanesque artwork has been designed with natural pigments, prepared with a medieval tempera, and enhanced with gold leaf. It took 80 hours of work to design. The label illustrates the strong historical links between the Clos de Vougeot and the Abbey of Cîteaux.
