Domaine Bizot is in my view one of the most exiting estates in Vosne-Romanee.
Domaine Bizot is not your average Vosne producer as it’s run by Jean-Yves Bizot who has a academic backgound in Geology and this somehow shows in both the wines and the way the Domaine is managed. The wines have a certain intellectuel touch … in the best possible sense … and while things may look casual there is a very serious attention to detail.
Jean-Yves Bizot is making some terrific wines from his small estate – wines that I personally adore and really enjoy drinking … when I have the opportunity … these are rare birds due to the quite miniscule production.
The Bizot wines are what I like to call organically styled i.e. made from whole cluster grapes (not destemmed) and with a minimum of SO2. The fruit is free and unconstrained and the transparancy is lovely. Floral wines in the best sense .. expressive, detailed and vibrant even at an early stage.
It was my first visit at Domaine Bizot and I was delighted to see that the 2014s continued the high quality of the 2013s from this estate. The wines showed very well at this stage … so let’s jump to the notes.
Tasting notes – Domaine Bizot 2014
As mentioned in other articles I was delightfully surprised by the 2014 reds in general, and while I know the 2014 vintage is perhaps not the vintage of the century … these are the style of wines that I love to enjoy … pure, juicy and charming … this is also the case with the Bizot line-up.
The notes are mentioned in the tasting order …
Domaine Bizot, Vosne-Romanee 2014
The Vosne-Romanee 2014 from Bizot is a beauty in the making. The bouquet is bursting with red fruit and Vosne spices … forward, floral and organic with notes of cinnamon, raspberries … hint of orange. On the palate fine almost silky fruit … pure and organic with a delicate balance. It’s quite lightfooted and airy … gorgeous pinot!
(Drink from 2023) – Very Good – (89 – 90p) – Tasted 16/11/2015 – from cask

Domaine Bizot, Marsanney Clos du Roi 2014
The Marsanney Clos du Roi 2014 is slightly more introvert and edgy than the Vosne village. The bouquet offer lovely fresh red and dark berry fruit … organic spiced with cinnamon and all spice. On the palate rich but cool fruit, more density and with good grip from the ripe tannins – a bit more rustic than the Vosne village. A lovely Marsanney … this wine should not be overlooked just because it’s from a “lesser known” appellation.
(Drink from 2023) – Good+ – (87 – 88p) – Tasted 16/11/2015 – from cask

Domaine Bizot, Bourgogne Le Chapitre 2014
The Bourgogne Le Chapitre 2014 from Bizot is really showing a beautiful promise … well beyond it’s level. The nose offer lovely organic red fruit .. outgoing and expressive. On the palate fine juicy fruit .. lightfooted and pure with a fine intensity for this level. A lovely Bougrogne rouge in the making – highly recommended.
(Drink from 2020) – Good – (86 – 87p) – Tasted 16/11/2015 – from cask

Domaine Bizot, Vosne-Romanee Les Jachées 2014
The Vosne-Romanee Les Jackeet is quite a step up from the regular Vosne village. The bouquet is offering lovely red fruits – red currant and pomegranate – spiced with cinnemon, all spice and violets. On the palate fine depth and focus with a delicate midpalate fruit .. quite intense for this level offering a lovely display of terroir. A fine Vosne village .. love the nerve, the focus and vibrant tension of this wine.
(Drink from 2025) – Fine – (90 – 91p) – Tasted 16/11/2015 – from cask

Domaine Bizot, Echezeaux 2014
The Echezeaux is several levels up from the otherwise fine Vosne Les Jachées. In the bouquet red layered fruit, pure and floral with notes of cherries, pomegranate, red currant – spiced with cinnamon and violets. On the palate intense and layered – yet lightfooted – offering a lovely juicy midpalate fruit. A really refined and stylish Echezeaux … a gorgeous wine.
(Drink from 2028) – Very Fine – (93 – 94p) – Tasted 16/11/2015 – from cask
