Happy New Year!

After a year with Covid and its accompanying restrictions, we all need to relax and enjoy, to celebrate like there IS a tomorrow, to kiss and hug and all the other things that currently are banned.

I know we will have to wait a bit longer, but my God! Even grumpy old men like me are in a hugging mood.

We need to sit in the spring sun in Nuits-St-Georges and let Julien or Thomas Protot bathe the table in wine and food at Café de Paris or La Cabotte.

Am I missing this? Ohh yes!

No Pointless Points!

For 2021, one needs to have some New Year’s resolutions. One of my main ones is this: disregarding points in favour of pleasure

While I do respect points and ratings – and with top-end wines, one can even find a meaning in the points if they’re given consistently – for the affordable Burgundies drunk with friends in the fading spring sun the story is quite different.

I don’t really worry if the wine is awarded 80 or 86 points – who cares? It’s the character and enjoyability that count. Will my palate smile? Is it a big smile?

Let’s drink, enjoy and feel the palate explode into a big smile.
