Joy and hedonism are what I look for in a bottle of wine, and for me it’s important that it shows well even when tasted young.
Much of the enjoyment comes from setting your mind free to indulge, and embracing the moment; not through analysis or a two-hour session of self-indulgent navel-gazing – as I see in some contexts.
Relax, enjoy; in the end, it’s only wine
I want wine to show a hedonistic kick, energy, exuberant hedonism, be a vin d’emotion to share with friends who are simply enjoying life.
That said, I also want the wine to show as promised in the tasting notes.
The original cask note from 2021
Domaine Moron-Garcia Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Grandes Vignes 2020 is from Premeaux, right next to Comte Liger-Belair’s holding. This has plenty of hedonistic decadence, and is exuberant and extroverted. Rose leaves and rose petals precede a near explosion of rosy aromas that jump from the glass. There are boysenberries as well on the sweetish palate, and it has a vinous, silky character offering real hedonistic pleasure. As usual, vinified with a third each baie-par-baie, whole-cluster, and machine-destemmed grapes.
(Drink from 2029) – Very Good (89-91p) – Tasted 15/05/2021 –
A reality check – summer 2022
The Domaine Garcia Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Grandes Vignes 2020 (it’s no longer Moron-Garcia) is showing all the qualities the initial tasting note promised – if handled with the necessary care.
‘Hog orders! Or rather counsel, if you like 😊🤣
Take this from a seasoned Burgundy drinker: Wines made to express their phenolics and complex acetates; made with baie-par-baie, or even just long (up to seven-days) cold soaks, need to be served cool. Otherwise, the effort to seduce you with complexity is often lost in the sensual fruit of global-warming heat. If you serve it a bit too cool – 10-12 Celsius – it will quickly warm up, and this will take you through the full experience, from the cool floral notes to the richer notes of the warming wine.
This is a win-win game. The worst outcome would be that you have to give the wine a bit of air to breathe while it’s warming.
The Garcia Grandes Vignes 2020 now?
The NSG Les Grandes Vignes may only be a village, but it has the full range of hedonistic decadence, and is exactly what I was hoping for, with its exuberant and extroverted feeling. Rose petals leap from the glass – such seductive and beautiful aromas. It has a delicate, vinous, silky feeling, offering real hedonistic joy.
Baie-par-baie works tremendously well. But pour it cold, serve it cool, and keep the bottle chilled during its enjoyment. Trust me, you will be rewarded for the care taken.
The ‘Hog supports decadent, informal enjoyment and hedonistic indulgence – respecting your health and the traffic rules in your country!
