I normally review wine, but in the future I will from time to time mention some of my favorite places in Burgundy – hotels, restaurants, views and monuments – impressions and knowledge that perhaps could make your next Burgundy trip even better and more interesting. Welcome to “My Burgundy”.
First out is Hotel Les Deux Chevres in Gevrey Chambertin – a lovely hotel located in two historic building just behind Domaine Armand Rousseau.
Les Deux Chevres – a personal and very refined hotel
To start with the beginning I got to know Paul Thomas – the co-owner and manager of Les Deux Chevres via our mutual interest in Burgundian history. He is following the Winehog and we began to correspond via email – and I got acquainted with the history of the hotel in Gevrey Chambertin – this is almost two years ago. Paul originates from UK, and his wife Jolanta restored the hotel which they now run together.
So on my March trip I finally had the opportunity to visit Paul and Jolanta to see the hotel first hand – and what a beautiful hotel it is.
People and history makes great hotels … Jolanta and Paul have created a very special and beautiful place in Gevrey – restoring two gorgeous historic buildings, converting these into a magnificent hotel. The renovation and restoration process took years as the state of the buildings was rather poor – click here to see a video that documents the transformation from a historic ruin – to the beautiful hotel Jolanta and Paul are offering today.
The buildings both have a long history – one was the legendary Gevrey restaurant Les Millisimes, that closed about 15 years back – I have great memories of the wine list and cellar in that restaurant. The other building of the hotel is the old Faiveley winery in Gevrey.
Both buidlings are beautifully restored, with such sense and attention to detail. It’s done with tremendous respect for the history of the buildings, by enhancing the historic elements of the buildings by adding beautiful classic furniture, and adding some modern elements and conveniences – creating a boutique like style – with classic rooms updated with luxurious and modern bathrooms.
The garden, the courtyard and the terrasses offer lovely views of the surrounding vineyards, a very Burgundian place indeed. Here is a look into the back yard of the Rousseau estate
Luxury in the middle of the vineyards…
In my view Les Deux Chevres is clearly of the highest standard of any Burgundian hotel I have stayed in, and for Burgundy this level is quite unique. Its quality to the smallest detail .. the cheeses for breakfast, the bread, the coffee …. all details are optimized and considered.
This is the hotel for those who want the best, access to modern conveniences and still be in touch with the Burgundian history and life.
You will wake up to the sound of the tractors of Domaine Armand Rousseau – if you choose to open the window – and with a view to the vineyards next to the hotel. For rental guests there is the possiblility to cook for themselves, as there is a separate kitchen available in one of the buildings. The Hotel also has a vary nice selection of wines from the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, and offer wine tastings.
Highly recommended
I highly recommend Les Deaux Cheveres if you are looking for a luxurious and genuine Burgundian Hotel.
Yes, I’m perhaps biased as I got to know the lovely people behind this hotel, and yes they have been so kind to support and recommend the blog – but this does not influence my view of this fine hotel. My memories from the restaurant Les Millisimes still bring a smile to my face, or was it the Henri Jayer Richebourg 1985 .. and so does this hotel.
This is for me the essence of travelling to Burgundy .. enjoying the wines, the landscape, the vineyards and the history.
