The new classification of Pouilly-Fuissé is now public, and it includes 22 – twenty-two! – 1ers crus in the fine Pouilly-Fuissé appellation.
Is 22 the right number, you might ask. I don’t know! But the vast number certainly complicates the process of understanding each and every one of them, of knowing them from their mineral characteristics, and from their terroirs.
But I guess this could also be said of other appellations (How many 1ers crus does Beaune have?). At least no grands crus were designated when the experts were deciding the outcome.
It is nevertheless a happy moment for the vignerons of Pouilly-Fuissé, finally be recognised for their hard – and successful – work.
I do believe that the truth is in the glass, and if the new classification is used properly, it will give us all better knowledge of the region.
