The likely last sale of a Romanée-Conti 1945 was in 2011, when Christies sold a bottle in Geneva on 17 May at a price of 109350 CHF.
Compared to this weekends sale the 111000 USD in 2011 does look rather pale. The 558000 USD is just a notch more the 5 times the price achieved in Geneva.
I would say that the wine sold in Geveva had the same high provenance as the wines from the Robert Drouhin celler, as it came from the DRC estate cellars back in 2007.
Christies then wrote: PROVENANCE: This really rare bottle was bought by the current owner during a Christie’s charity sale in May 2007 in Geneva and never moved from Christie’s warehouse until then. When we went to the domaine to pick-up the bottle, Aubert de Vilaine agreed exceptionally for this charity sale to give us his souvenir of this great wine.
