Edouard Confuron (a part of the widespread Confuron family) comes from the relatively low-profile Confuron-Gindre estate, which is located just below La Grande Rue, next to Domaine Meo-Camuzet. Edouard is working with his father, but is slowly – and successfully – making his mark on the wines.
The relatively traditional style has been lightened, with less new oak, less sulphur during vinification, and more use of whole-cluster grapes. This is nothing magical or revolutionary. However, if the wines have been basically sound (grape-wise), then even modest changes can sometimes do wonders.
But there is more: Edouard has started his own estate, also in Vosne, but below the road and using some of the vineyards from the family estate.

In the new estate, he is free to follow his vision and make the wines that he likes himself, without constraints. He began in 2021 – not the easiest year – and a full-scale whole-cluster share was not always possible due to the weather and the resulting quality of the harvest.
The 2021s are therefore a beginning; an exciting beginning that shows interesting wines.
Lets go
Firstly, it is important to underline that new domaines should have room to experiment and find their style. Edouard has some nice family vineyards that he can explore at this stage, and this exploration does result in some variation in style and perceived quality.
I prefer some of the wines. Perhaps Edouard does as well, and has things he wants to adjust; this is how life goes. Nevertheless, the 2021s were an interesting start, and Edouard definitely has talent.
Domaine Edouard Confuron Coteaux Bourguignon 2021
This comes from plots in lower Morey-Saint-Denis and Vosne-Romanée. Mostly gamay (90%), the addition of 10% pinot noir gives a lovely, juicy character. Add to this 50% whole clusters and we have an attractive, lively wine in the 2021 vintage. Energetic and enjoyable.

Domaine Edouard Confuron Bourgogne 2021
The Bourgogne rouge is at the more vivid end of the vinous spectrum, like many 2021s. It comes from the area between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne, and includes 30% whole clusters, which would have been more if the harvest had given the needed conditions. It’s fresh and intense, with delicate fruit and good energy.
