Visit Domaine Julien – tasting of the 2016s from cask

Domaine Julien … Étienne Julien … makes some intriguingly delightful wines. I really like the style, the energy and the lovely juiciness of these wines.

As I taste these wines … from the 2013 vintage and onwards, I have started to appreciate or should I say enjoy the inner quality of these wines more and more. What is immediately charming also has a tremendous depth and a inner radiance of balance and verve. The fruit seem to have another natural depth and tension than wines from many other producers.

Yes one could argue that some have better terroirs – and that might well be – but often one could argue that the wines of Étienne Julien will bring a bigger smile on your face – and another level of liveliness and energy to the wines – rendering quite many good wines seeming technical and slightly shallow energy wise. The Julien wines are not technical masterpieces but wines of flesh and blood …

Perhaps this is not very clear – but I do feel that these wines deserve you strong attention …

The estate Gérard Julien

The Julien estate is as mentioned located in Comblancien on RN974 – just at the entrance to the village coming from Nuits-Saint-Georges – finding it is easy – if GPS and other modern equipment is not a part of the navigation – as these so helpful and modern devices will send you somewhat off target …

Étienne Julien is a funny and cheerful young vigneron in his mid twenties .. sharp and with a great sense of humor. He is however – make no mistake – serious about his wines and very serious about the quality made at the estate. This is – like most other estates – an old family estate, and Étiennes first vintage was 2012 – so impressive progress already.
