A big week of tastings requires a timely editorial turnaround, so there is very little poetry in this article covering the 2019 vintage from Etienne Julien.

The 2019s from Domaine Etienne Julien
The Etienne Julien wines are honest; they are wines of pleasure with a bit of rustic charm. These are not eclectic or noble wines, but they do deliver fine emotional values and the true joy of pinot.
To my mind, the 2019s here are quite a bit better than the rather sturdy 2018s. The ’19s are vivid and energetic, and are a joy to partake of, with a lovely combination of red and dark fruits.
Tasting notes from February 10
I enjoyed a fine tasting with Etienne to get an impression of his 2019s. Let’s go to the notes!
Domaine Etienne Julien Aligote 2019
First in the glass was the fine Aligote, made from vineyards in the lower parts of Comblanchien. A fresh, vivid Aligote, this is made from 40-year-old vines, giving it a generous stance, with pear and quite some richness on the bouquet and palate. It has very fine energy.

Domaine Etienne Julien Aloxe-Corton Les Valoziéres 1er Cru 2019
The Aloxe-Corton is vivid and quite energetic, with nice depth and a lovely, generous feel. It’s a bit rustic on the palate, yet has good energy and richness. It certainly has plenty of intensity for its level.

Domaine Etienne Julien Côte de Nuits Villages 2019
This is a blend from nine different plots in the Comblanchien area. It’s quite deep and delicate, although the recent racking and sulphuring made tasting a bit difficult at the moment. Not the utmost in complexity, but drinking well, and on the hedonistic side.
