The Côte de Nuits village area is in my view very exciting as numerous producers is located in these small villages.
Etienne Julien is one – and he is definitely one of the very top producers – always a great pleasure to visit.
The 2017s from Domaine Etienne Julien
As I really enjoy the Etiennes Julien wines I was really pleased to see more wine in the cellar in the 2017 vintage … after a very low yield in 2016 and partly also in 2015.
The harvest in 2017 offer some quite substantial wines … with vivid and fine delicacy. The 2017s are pretty and elegant, perhaps lacking a bit of intensity and concentration compared to the 2016s … but still sufficient intensity to unfold the character of the vintage in a beautiful way.
I do find the Julien wines both charming and vivid, and they offer a tremendous and effortless drinkability.

Tasting notes from May 30st 2018
Fine tasting with Etienne to get an impression of the 2017s … lets go to the notes.
First one in the glass was the delightful Domaine Etienne Julien, Côte de Nuits villages 2017 – made from plots located in the Comblanchien appellation. The bouquet is vivid and energetic, offering a delightful fruit, and minerality. On the palate a quite generous fruit – delivering a nice and vivid fruit.
(Drink From 2019) – Good – (85 – 86p) – tasted 30/05/2018

Domaine Etiene Julien, Aloxe Corton Les Valoziéres 1er cru 2017
The Aloxe-Corton is vivid and energetic, with a nice depth and a lovely genereours feel. On the palate nice palate depth fruit .. giving a good intensity for the level.
(Drink From 2023) – Good+ – (86 – 87p) – tasted 30/05/2018

Domaine Etienne Julien, Nuit-Saint-Georges village 2017
Next up the Nuits-Saint-Georges village from the terroirs Longecourt, La Maladiére and Charbonniéres. A lovely and rather vivid 2017 – fine and lovly energy. Not quite the energy of the 2016 – yet somehow a better balance. A lovely juicy impression of the fruit – drinking very well indeed.
(Drink From 2024) – Very Good – (87 – 88p) – tasted 30/05/2018

Domaine Etienne Julien, Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Saints-Juliens 2017
The Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Saints-Juliens is a lovely vivid and energetic wine. It’s more floral and offering a relatively deep fruit. I do like the terroirs north of Nuits-Saint-Georges … and Aux Saint-Julien is definitely one of then. Is it matching the 2016? .. not quite perhaps .. but it’s a lovely wine!
(Drink From 2024) – Very Good – (88 – 89p) – tasted 30/05/2018

Domaine Etienne Julien, Nuist-Saint-Georges Les Bousselots 2017
The Bousselots is yet another step up the quality ladder. It’s quite floral, vivid and delicate, with layers of quite rich fruit … lavish in a way. I really enjoy the 1er cru – a favourite of mine.
(Drink From 2027) – Fine+ – (92 – 93p) – tasted 30/05/2018

Domaine Etienne Julien, Echezeaux 2017
The Echezeaux is a further step ud .. with a delicate and brimming fruit. The fruit is fresh, vivid and mouthfillng – yet it’s vivacious and lightfooted. A very elegant and balanced effort from Etienne – will be exiting to follow.
(Drink From 2029) – Very Fine – (93 – 95p) – tasted 30/05/2018
