I have now tasted quite some 2024s, and while the quality of the whites could be said to look very promising.. the reds seem to give a somewhat confusing picture.
Some reds are light and lightfooted with a lovely, fragile perfumed style, while others have a much more intense and powerful style, partly driven by oak, harvest time and elevage.

Let’s just face the music … 2024 Reds is a problematic vintage … with ups and downs, and while quite many wines will give you pleasure …. I doubt that many will qualify as wine of the century or even the decade.
This is vignerons vintage where hard work in the vineyards …20+ sprayings against mildew … and a lot of hard work in the cellars converting somewhat unripe wines into some surprisingly enjoyable wines.
Some vignerons will say that they like the result … in the end, and this can be fair and reflect what is in the glass. But for many, this is a vintage best forgotten! This has been a nightmare for many vignerons …
The 2024s are, however, a miracle … and 30 years ago no reds would have been made … this is how serious the humidity and the mildew attack was in 2024.
So enjoy the good 2024 reds … they are out there … and rare in both numbers of wines and bottles!
What is a good Pinot in the 2024 vintage
In my view, a pinot noir should have enough ripeness and concentration to display a bit of midpalate charm and energy. This means the fruit should have a hint of sweetness on the midpalate, giving the fruit notes a bit of life.
This also means that the oak and the toasting should not be too powerful, as this will kill the remaining life and energy of the wine.
Nothing is more boring than a watery and over-oaked 2024 pinot.
What is going on?
I taste what is in the glass, and describe what I taste, and I need to tell my feeling … to be honest, I love the whites 2024s, they are close to what I would call a classic vintage. Or as close as we can get these days.
