Four open bottles of Domaine Moron-Garcia! It sounds almost too good to be true! This was nevertheless what happened, as I had the chance to follow four wines over a week.
I was very impressed when I tasted the Moron-Garcia ’19s from the cask in late 2019 and again in 2020, and now I had the chance to dwell on them – and drool – for a week.
These are my feelings about these floral treats:
The wines are outstandingly detailed and tantalizing, sensually expressive with loads of floral details – different types of rose – and an open character that can, without doubt, be credited to the baie-par-baie vinification employed by Pierre-Olivier Garcia.”
Moron-Garcia 2019 bottled and just opened
I got the chance to finish the remains of four bottles opened recently for a tasting at the estate in Nuits-Saint-Georges. The bottles were 3/4 full. and had been opened a few hours earlier. That gave me the opportunity to follow their development over several days post-opening.
The Domaine Moron-Garcia Brouilly La Folie 2019 is a Beaujolais, thus Gamay. It has developed beautifully, with hints of deep, velvety roses – very rare for a Beaujolais. It has, as I remarked after a barrel tasting, tremendous freshness, with an almost pinotesque liveliness. This is a fruit explosion, yet still cool and focused; serve slightly chilled. Full score on the likability and emotional meter.

The Moron-Garcia Côte de Nuits Village Aux Clous Virey 2019 is a tremendous beauty, tasted for the second time this year. The nose is sensual, in line with the previous tasting. It is really blossoming, with finely perfumed pink spring roses (Rosa Peace), delicate and detailed without any sultry hints. As the wine opens, faint notes of fresh tobacco leaves are perfumed with light vanilla. This is very detailed and precise in an effortless, light-footed way. The roses! The roses of baie-par-baie!

The Domaine Moron-Garcia Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Charmois 2019 is an explosion of roses and red fruit that really shows the marvels of baie-par-baie vinification. The nose has the most delicate, deep, red-rose nuances – dark red and velvety, sensual, and sexy. On the palate, it’s deep with relatively dark red fruit, with some Scandinavian cloudberries and lingonberries brightening up the flavours.
(Drink from 2027) – Fine (91-92p) – Tasted 12/03/2021 –
Corton is the domaine’s top treat and a unique cuvée, using the baie-par-baie technique. Domaine Moron-Garcia Corton “Cuvée Baie-par-Baie” 2019 adds layers and depth compared with the other Moron-Garcia wines. It’s intense, vivid, and very energetic, with levels of fully ripe, sweet fruit. Decadent – yes. Sexy? Even more so. It is perfumed, youthful, and truly firing on all cylinders. I adore the energetic silky fruit and the mid-palate delicacy and vivacity. Corton actually can produce very sensual, perfumed, and emotional wines. The rose scents and flavours are out of this world.
(Drink from 2033) – Very Fine+ (94-95p) – Tasted 11/03/2021 –
Keeping up appearances
I followed the wines for five days – with less and less in the bottles. The wines held up beautifully, even improving over the first days. Then the course reversed, and they ended up fading a bit – although with very little left in the bottle.
Still, they kept up very well!
