Domaine Hubert Lignier was one of first estates I visited when I began my quest to understand Burgundy. This was back in the late 1990s when Romain Lignier was making truly magnificent wines at Domaine Hubert Lignier.
Sadly Romain passed away in an untimely fashion in 2004 and, while the years after this were somewhat turbulent, Hubert and his other son, Laurent, have managed to come out on top and are again producing tremendous wines.
The top wine from Domaine Hubert Lignier was – and is – the Clos de la Roche, but now a new top cuvée has been created: a special Clos de la Roche from the Monts Luisants climat within the appellation, and a tribute to Henri Lignier.
I give you the new Clos de la Roche MCMLV. The first vintage was 2017.
So let’s take a closer look at the north of Morey-Saint-Denis and study this new wine.
Clos de la Roche: one name, several vineyards!
Clos de la Roche is often overlooked when the great grands crus of Burgundy are mentioned. But the delight and pleasure of a fully mature Clos de la Roche should not be missed in the quest for gorgeous Burgundy moments. I have had some truly memorable experiences with Clos de la Roche from producers like Hubert Lignier, Ponsot and Dujac.
Clos de la Roche is, however, a rather complex vineyard, as it has been enlarged significantly from its original size and shape by including parts of surrounding vineyards.
Clos de la Roche consists of plots in 8 climats located on the northwestern side of Morey-Saint-Denis (see map below).
