Good morning Burgundy … sunny weekend ahead!
Friday was a sunny but cold day … 11 to 15 degrees … not really the Indian summer we would love to have.
A lot of activities in Volnay and Pommard … literally crowded with cars and vans in the vineyards. Most people were harvesting reds … the whites will for most parts be havested next week.
This was in contrast to the very meagre activities in Côte de Nuits … between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle I only saw one harvester on my Mini tour; Charles Lachaux and team who was harvesting some NSG 1er cru.
I had a talks with Sarah Glantenay (Domaine Georges Glantenay) and Pierre-Henri Rougeot at Domaine Rougeots and indications are better than I expected regarding the sugar levels in the whites … but still on the lower side as expected.
The alcohol boost!
As you might know, it is legal to chaptalize the wines within quite liberal limits.
The vigneron is allowed to add 1.5% ABV (12 g/l) in the region of Burgundy … but they might be allowed 0.5% ABV additionally on dispensation.
If you have the full possibilities then you can lift a wine from 9% to 11% … quite scary actually.
To add 0.50% to adjust the wine is however not really a capital crime …
