I don’t like beating around the bushes … so let’s be very clear … the Montrachet hill is without a doubt the home of the greatest dry white wine terroir in the world.
We do have the white Haut-Brion … but other than this I don’t really see thegreatness and complexity that will match a top end Montrachet – i.e. Criot-Batard, Batard-Montrachet, Bienvenue-Batard Montrachet, Chevalier-Montrachet and Le Montrachet.

Some can be close … Meursault Perriere and Corton Charlemagne … but they are only close and the Montrachet hill has quite many great 1er crus that rival a lot of the other great withes in the world … I am here thinking of Chassagne Blanchot Dessus, Puligny Le Caillerets and Puligny Pucelles.
The great village
Puligny-Montrachet is however a relatively small village, and while there are many good producers in Puligny only a few can claim to be in the small group of emotional vines.
One is the very sympathetic Jacques Carillon …who has evolved his expression and the quality over the last decade … making more and more elegant precise wines in a world of increasing global warming.
Jacques Carillon is quite traditional and the definition of this wines is getting better and better. This is why he gets two hearts on the vin d’emotion scale – yes they are that good.
I had the possibility to taste the 2024s just at the end of the harvest … and what a treat!
Tasting the 2024s from Jacques Carillon
Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet 2024
The 2024s from Jacques Carillion are very elegant, perfumed and with a medium body impression. They are delicate … elegant yet quite intense … with a cool and forward expression. They have a lovely fresh style … without any hint of global warming … classic in a good sense of the word. Really enjoy a true and classic Puligny village. Drink young or keep for 10 years.
(Drink from 2026) – Very Good – (90p) –
Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet Champ Canet 2024
Puligny Champ Canet 2024 is a beautiful wine. Very floral and refined with a nice mineral tone and perfumed spiciness. Very elegant and feminine with the delicate vivid energy – cool and with a lovely tension.
(Drink from 2027) – Fine – (92p) –
Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet Les Perriéres 2024
Puligny Les Perriéres is a much more mineral wine. Plenty of limestone and the deep mineral note does put this wine in another class food wise. This is a wine for more weighty dishes … white fish of poultry – who said Poularde de Bresse … where the limestone soil will do wonders.
(Drink from 2032) – Very Fine – (93p) –
