Last fall, I put the 100-point wine-rating scale to the test and opened its use to discussion. Do vignerons want it? And perhaps more importantly, do Winehog readers want a points score on the wines?
The vignerons
The results of my survey show the vignerons are ambivalent; most do not feel very strongly about the ratings, and only a few have strong views. To be fair, points ratings never had the same weight in Burgundy as they did – or do – in Bordeaux. So I thought the world was ready for a situation without points.
Boy was I wrong, seriously wrong, according to the readers of the Winehog.
The reader’s verdict
As the last and most important test, I asked my readers. The verdict is crystal clear: 75% of them want me to continue with points ratings on the 100-point scale.
Democracy at work, I guess, so of course I will respect this.
Points will continue
The survey was clear, so I will continue with points. The verdict was so strong that I will not question their use in future.
I will use points as intended, and will be firm and consistent (if that’s possible).
