Les Amoureuses …. a name signaling passion and desire. It’s one of the most sought after wines in Burgundy – indeed difficult to find despite a quite healthy production from the multiple owners and quite a few negociants that also produce this seductive Chambolle 1er cru.
One of the top interpretations of Les Amoureuses comes from Domaine J.-F. Mugnier – where the vinification enhances the refinement and delicacy to a magic hedonistic and seductive level. Is it the best Amoureuses? .. one of them for sure .. a mesmerizing wine with breathtaking beauty.
So lets go to Les Amoureuses .. to take a look at the terroir.
Chambolle Musigny Les Amuoureuses – two sections
The vineyard Les Amoureuses is divided in two sections – one above the road to Chateau Clos de Vougeout and just north of Musigny – and one below the road and below the plot located adjacent to the northern end of Musigny – see map below.
The second section is by far the largest an it cover the area from the road down towards the village of Vougeot .. a quite steep hill and to the north the 1er cru Les Hauts Doix is following Amoureuses and the road between Chambolle and Vougeot.
It should be noted that the rather peculiar border between Hauts Doix and the northern part of Les Amoureuses is taken from the cadastre plots. Looking at the aerial photos it seems like the upper part is considered as a part of Les Amoureuses and the lower part as Les Hauts Doix … as Groeffier owns both the terroirs. The cadastre border would be very diffcult to manage viticulture wise.
In my view the best parts of Les Amoureuses seem to be in the top part close to Musigny, and the potentially the lesser part is the bottom part towards Les Hauits Doix and the road between Chambolle and Vougeot. The quality produced by Groffier in the lower part of the vineyard can however be very good indeed .. the 2010 is gorgeous .. so in reality the quality level is most likely very fine throughout the entire appellation.
J.-F. Mugnier Les Amoureuses – the plots
Mugnier has two plots one in each section of Les Amoureuses – covering 0.5285 ha in total.
