Rating of the wines is of course important, and while points are important I do find the point scale limitet especially regarding the rating of wines from the lesser appellations.
Points and ratings are important but with prices increasing the rating of wines does loose some of the power and importance in some cases.
A lot of “lesser” wines are rated between 85 and 87 points, and while there clearly are differences in the quality – it’s hard to rate wines wines from modest terroirs much higher and maintaining the overall consistency. …
Some wines does however have a special quality – and while they are from a lesser appellation they do hold a tremendous quality and give a lot of pleasure.
The Winehog Rating
I have therefore made a new special rating for wines that offer a special personality, pleasure and quality. The wines are marked with the Winehog signature, that indicates that they will offer a special pleasure or “joie de vivre” if you like.
The Winehog rating is given aside the ordinary points rating … and is given only to the wines that offer great pleasure and joy along with true personality.
Wines from modest terroirs can merit the Winehog rating, but also special Grand Cru wines of top quality can get the Winehog rating – if they are that good.
Example: Domaine Georges Glantenay, Bourgogne Pinot Noir
The Glantenay Bourgogne Pinot Noir “Maison Dieu” 2017 is a delightful wine, offering what I want to find in a 2017. It’s fresh, vivid and lively with plenty of fruit and a quite impressive intensity for this level. A lovely Bourgogne in my view – drinking very well indeed.
(Drink from 2019) – Good (85 – 87) – Tasted 17/12/2018
Why the The Glantenay Bourgogne Pinot Noir “Maison Dieu” 2017
This wine provide great pleasure and drinkability …. it simply drink very well indeed … offering a lot of qualities even at a rather modest price. Giving its a (85 – 87p) rating – it does somehow not highlight the qualities, the pleasure and drinkability of this wine. The Winehog rating show that here is a wine, that offer a lot of pleasure .. and in this case at a relatively low price and from a rather modest appellation. It’s driven by the lovely fruit of the 2017 vintage … lovely … just lovely.
How many and how few
I will not set targets for the number of Winehog ratings … they will simply be awarded when I feel there is a reason to promote a wine a little extra.
I do hope that the Winehog rating is well received ,,,, and it will be used moving forward in my ratings.

I really like this addition to your rating system. I recently had the Domaine des Croix les boutieres 2015, and even though it comes from a lesser appellation it still provided me with a lot of pleasure and I found it very charming indeed.
So thumbs up and thanks for some great content.
