Sometimes pure luck strikes … and one stumbles into a tasting of the Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair 2021 lineup.

Please note this was an informal and quick tasting at the Comte Liger-Belair Cuverie in Vosne-Romanée.
Very enjoyable to taste with Henry and Brune Liger-Belair alongside Louis-Michel and Constance Liger-Belair – indeed a family treat.
The 2021s from Liger-Belair are rare birds, as the spring frost reduced the yields dramatically – 70%. This forced Louis-Michel to reduce the number of cuvées and blend some of the smaller cuvées into a new Vosne-Romanée 1er cru.
The 2021s are now gaining some bottle age, and the wines are starting to show quite some differences as some are showing quite a lot better in this frost-plagued year.
So let’s dive into the 2021s to see the favourites of the vintage!

The 2021s from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair
The 2021 vintage was difficult due to the frost that set back Liger-Belair and other core Vosne producers. Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair lost around 70% of total production, and it had to make a blended cuvee from the small 1ers crus in Vosne. The Les Petits Monts, Aux Brulees, Les Chaumes, and Les Suchots were assembled into this Vosne 1er Cru; hopefully a one-off, but still a lively offer.
The phenolic ripeness is showing some variation and is presumably explaining the differences in energy and level of readiness.
So let’s taste! – these are my current favourites in 2021 …
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée Clos du Chateau 2021
The Clos du Chateau is nice ripeness … beautifully rounded and generous. It has a lovely floral note, with cinnamon lurking in the background. Quite forward for the vintage … I do love the Clos du Chateau style. Lacks a bit of focus and energy compared with vintages like 2019.

Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Vosne-Romanée 1er cru 2021
The Les Petits Monts, Aux Brulees, Les Chaumes, and Les Suchots are blended into this Vosne 1er cru. In a year with little fruit due to the frost, this is an exciting, hedonistic endeavour. It is quite spicy and vivid. Still relatively openly knit, it has a fairly relaxed mineral structure. Les Suchots is the dominant plot in the blend – lacks a bit of mineral focus due to the blend of terroirs.
(Drink from 2033) – Very Fine (92-93p) – Tasted 27/09/2025
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair Nuits-St-Georges Aux Cras 2021
The Aux Cras is, in a sense, the wines of the vintage here. Perfect phenolic ripeness and a lovely transparency and elegance. Showing very expressive for a Cras … wow, this is elegant and hedonistic. Love the midpalate energy,
