One of the highly acclaimed “new” domaines in the Gevrey-Chambertin appelation is Domaine Marc Roy. I had until recently only tasted one bottle from this exiting estate, and that left me with a desire to explore these fine village wines further.
I was therefore delighted when I had the opportunity to visit Domaine Marc Roy in March, to taste the 2014 vintage from cask.
I was received by Alexandrine Roy who is now running the domaine, and she seems to be very dedicated with the heart and preferences in the right place – in my view she makes some of very the best village wines in the Gevrey appellation.
A bit of history about the Marc Roy estate
Alexandrine is the fourth generation at the domaine, and she is running the estate with the help of both her father and mother.
She made her debut as winemaker with the 2003 vintage, and have over the years refined her wines to be some of the most vibrant, refined and transparent terroir driven Gevrey village wines made today.
I was blown away the first time I tasted her wines, and my tasting of the 2014 vintage from cask just confirmed my passion for these wines.
Alexandrine makes 4 village reds and a Marsanney Blanc – all are magnificent in their own way and style. They are all pure, airy and intense but still quite lightfooted and filigree for these appellations.
The 2014s here offer a fine balance between rich fruit and juicy freshness .. the are very balanced and will no doubt provide gorgeous drinking in the years to come.
So to the tasting notes ….
Domaine Marc Roy, Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes 2014
The Gevrey Vieilles Vigne is a delightfully expressive effort – made from a 70+ year old vines. In the bouquet layers of red and dark berry fruit … pure and outgoing with a lovely expression of Gevrey terroir. On the palate good concentration – but still quite lightfooted and airy. Love the display of terroir and the expressive fruit. Will provide excellent drinking even early on.
(Drink from 2021) – Very Good (88 – 90p) – Tasted 17/03/2015 from CASK

Domaine Marc Roy, Gevrey Chambertin La Justice 2014
La Justice – located just behind the domaine – is more focused and defined than the charming Vieilles Vigne. The bouquet is bursting with cherries, cherry stones and red forest berries brought forward by a fine earthy minerality. On the palate more concentration and focus .. with a perhaps more classic Gevrey expression. … delicious.
(Drink from 2022) – Very Good+ (89 – 90p) – Tasted 17/03/2015 from CASK

Domaine Marc Roy, Gevrey Chambertin Clos Prieur 2014
The Clos Prieur is a delighful wine from a special terroir located just below Mazis-Chambertin. In the nose delicate quite floral red fruit, cinnamon, and perfumed by a quite intense chalky/earthy minerality. On the palate crisp and cool with this fine chalkiness playing with the red berries. I love the expression in this wine … a delightful glass.
(Drink from 2023) – Very Good+ (90 – 91p) – Tasted 17/03/2015 from CASK

Domaine Marc Roy, Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexandrine 2014
The Cuvee Alexandrine is a very special wine made from 100% millerandage grapes (shot berries). In the bouquet lovely expressive quite floral red fruit … notes of pomegranate and cherries. On the palate very juicy fruit … pure and so vibrant, with it’s delicate pomegranate notes. This is a gorgeous and very energetic wine for this appellation … why get a lesser Grand Crus when you can enjoy this.
