Domaine Thomas-Collardot is one of the new discoveries of 2018 – a relatively new and small estate, making some vivid and pure wines in Puligny-Montrachet.
To be honest the Puligny-Montrachet scene has been somewhat quiet the last years but suddenly the rather static situation has been changed and this year I’m please to report more new talents and big steps forward in quality for some of the older and more well known estates.
I had the pleasure of tasting the wines of Domaine Thomas-Collardot at Grands Jours de Bourgogne, and made a small presentation of the estate – see this article.
Visiting Domaine Thomas-Collardot in Puligny
I was very impressed by the 2016s when I tasted them at Grands Jours de Bourgogne, but I was also very eager to visit the estate – to see what Jacqueline Collardot and her son is doing in the small estate in the centre of Puligny.
This estate might be small – but the quality so far is tremendous, and with new vineyards on the way, I see a fine future for Domaine Thomas-Collardot.
The style is clear and consistent – vivid, pure and crisp wines – fine acidity and in my view a perfect ripeness level in the wines – not an easy task in vintages like 2015, 2016 and 2017. This freshness and energy found in these vintages is a very good sign for the future quality – to make great 2014s – were an easier task for most.
Garage or estate
Domaine Thomas Collardot is still expanding, but currently they are confined to a large – but cooled garage, in a yard a bit behind Domaine Leflaive.
The cellar is however ready to receive the next harvest – with even more new vineyards being integrated in the fine portfolio of terroirs.
The principle here is to cherish the different terroirs – and while the estate is quite small – they do have – or will have access to make quite many different terroirs – albeit only in relatively limited quantities.
I do think the strategy is paying off – firstly the wines are well defined as are the terroirs used for each wine – secondly it does allow to claim slightly higher prices – when selling Lieu-dit wines.
The quality is there .. and the best lieu-dits are in contention with some of the very well known estates – an estate to explore at first given opportunity – this could be difficult to find.
Tasting for the 2017s from Domaine Thomas-Collardot
I had the opportunity to taste five 2017s from cask – from the Bourgogne Blanc to the top lieu-dit … via the currently only 1er cru in the portfolio – the Puligny-Montrachet Hameau de Blagny.
Domaine Thomas-Collardot, Bourgogne Les Petits Poiriers 2017
The Bourgogne Blanc Les Petits Poiriers is a fine example of the estate style. Fine intensity, lovely focus and freshness – without showing the hotter side of the 2017 vintage. The Thomas-Collardot style is a perfect match for the vintage as the citrus and mineraldriven character of the wines provide the wine swith a lovely energy and balance. A big Bourgogne Blanc in the making .. delighted.

Domaine Thomas-Collardot, Puligny-Montrachet Derriére La Velle 2017
The village wines are quite different – with Derrére la Velle and Les Houliéres on quite equal terms – but also quite different – with Derriére La Velle representing the more generous side … coming from a terroir just below the village – to the north. Lovely Puligny character, fine volume and a slight opulence compared to the Les Houliéres. This is a matter of taste … as they are on equal terms quality wise. 2 barrels made of this cuvée.

Domaine Thomas-Collardot, Puligny-Montrachet Les Houliéres 2017
This is also close to the road, below the village but to the south – below Les Tremblots – it’s in my view a more vivid and vibrant wine – yet not bigger to be honest. As I recall three barrels of this beauty – lovely expression of the terroir with the citrus infused minerality .. now known as the house style.
