Burgundy is all about knowing the good and right producers. Vintages are different, but in reality, it is almost always the same producers who make the good wines and the Vin d`emotion. They have the right vineyards and the talent to produce the wines. I will therefore focus more on the producers and a bit less on the single tasting notes.
Vigneron: Benoit Chevallier –
Benoit Chevallier is a new, very promising producer in Vosne-Romanée. The wines are pure, clean and on the slightly polished side. Very enjoyable wines that give you the urge to taste more. The cold prefermentation is the key, as it gives a good chance to find a wine with emotional qualities.
About
Domaine Benoit Chevalier is an exciting new name in Vosne-Romanée, Benoit having taken over the vineyards of his father’s family. His dad, Maurice Chevallier, was previously the mayor of Vosne-Romanée, and the family has further vineyards in the area; Benoit’s cousin, Yves Chevallier, runs his own eponymous estate.

Benoit is both a friendly and a competent guy who has gotten a fine start as a vigneron. Previously, he was in the technology business, but clearly, he also has hidden talents as a winegrower.
The estate is located on the RD974, and Benoit’s first vintage was 2019. So, with a couple of years under his belt, let’s take a closer look at the 2023s.
Style and expression
The style is quite clear for such a young domaine, using destemmed grapes and a relatively long (four- to five-day) cold pre-fermentation. These choices give the wines a spicy, perfumed style that is delicate and could, with a bit of additional refinement, compare favourably to that of Domaine Bachelet in Gevrey-Chambertin.
Benoit Chevallier is continuing his style and is gradually improving the expression of the wines.

Domaine Benoit Chevallier Bourgogne 2023
The Bourgogne rouge is from the climats Aux Bas des Communes (0.15 ha) and En Lutenière (1.2 ha). A generous and delicate wine, the cold pre-fermentation adds some complexity. Why make things difficult when this works very well? A tremendous Bourgogne rouge.

Domaine Benoit Chevallier Vosne-Romanée 2023
The regular Vosne-Romanée shows lovely complexity in its rich and perfumed notes. Lovely minerality and a Vosne mid-palate juiciness. Showing very well … charming and effortless.

Domaine Benoit Chevallier Vosne-Romanée Colombiere 2023
A Vosne-Romanée Colombiere is more on the mineral side, but is somehow missing some of the silky generosity of the generic Vosne. This has more character and edge, and will, in the long run, be more interesting.
