The 2019 vintage will surely be remembered for its high quality. But I will never forget the troublesome process of visiting and tasting the wines due to the Covid-19 situation.
The vignerons are doing their utmost to receive you, and I owe a debt of gratitude to them and to the BIVB. All have different protocols to limit the spread of the virus – yet somehow it works.
Some provide opportunities for photos, others are more limiting, with the mask covering the well-known faces of the family members.
The Mugneret-Gibourg sisters are awaiting another grandchild, so it’s only natural that they were extra careful. The tasting held at their office and tasting room on the ground floor, with previously prepared samples, worked a charm.
These are, as usual, wines for the long run. Understanding that, they will eventually charm us all with the most wonderfully perfumed, classic Vosne style.
We were received by Marie-Christine Mugneret and got a short introduction to the vintage. As always, it was a pleasure to visit here (the photos here are from previous years, to avoid the masks).
Their 2019s are rich, quite silkily textured wines with impressive weight and intensity. To say they are cooler than the 2018s would perhaps be wrong, but they are fresher, more energetic, and more vivid. This is the beauty of the vintage – but don’t expect these wines to leap out of the glass with youthful charm.
They are generous, sensual, and extremely seductive wines; they have this little “extra” energy- and acidity-wise. And they are sometimes breathtakingly vivid and hedonistic.
The Mugneret-Gibourg style requires time: time to unfold, time to flourish, and time to reveal the full potential.

Tasting the 2019s at Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg
The wines were tasted on February 8 as samples taken from the casks.
Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg Bourgogne 2019
The Bourgogne rouge offers generous intensity and weight; 14.8% alcohol is a bit (quite a bit) “limite” as the French say, but somehow it doesn’t show as too much alcohol. It’s a substantial wine expression-wise and, as with many other 2019s, it is forgiving. Despite its generosity, the fresh vivacity of the vintage shines though. Give it a few years to unfold.
(Drink from 2026) – Very Good – (87p) – Tasted from cask 09/02/2021.
Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée 2019
The Vosne Village offers generous weight and vivid concentration. It is made with a quite light hand, and has thus kept the freshness of the vintage. The nose shows a mixture of red and darker fruits – nice Vosne spiciness with fine notes of violets and lavender. Approaching 14%, but it has a lovely feeling, with a lighter expression than the 2018 and a more enticing, charming, perfumed note.
(Drink from 2029) – Fine – (90-91p) – Tasted from cask 09/02/2021 – 😁
