Bruno Clavelier is a friendly, extremely dedicated man whose perfectionist approach to winemaking and understanding of terroir are impressive.
My tastings chez Clavelier rarely produce any big surprises, as my high expectations are always met by very well-made wines (see the articles on previous tastings).

These are not wines that take you by surprise, nor wines that will seduce you out of the blue. They can often lead to a controllable infatuation, and they in no way seem calculated to impress.
All that said, the big smile on Bruno’s face this time somehow tells a different – and joyous – story. He has really nailed his 2019s to a degree of perfection that maintains the core of the estate style while simultaneously revealing the seductive beauty of the vintage.
No need to explain more: Let’s taste!
Bruno Clavelier Bourgogne Aligote 2019
The Bourgogne Aligote is a special wine from Bruno Clavelier, made from very old vines planted 100 years ago in 1921. It’s an intense wine, with quite some weight, generosity, and the lovely sensuality of the 2019 vintage. As always, a fine mineral note. Quite a sexy aligote!
(Drink from 2021) – Good+ – (87-88p) – Tasted 10/02/2021
Bruno Clavelier Bourgogne Passetoutgrain 2019
The Bourgogne Passetoutgrain contains a bit of gamay (10%), but is otherwise pinot from 80-year-old vines. A forward, sensual wine, this has some weight as well as a slight vin-de-soif boost from the gamay – 10% isn’t much, but it certainly lifts this wine in a charming way. I do like a good Passetoutgrain.

Bruno Clavelier Bourgogne Rouge 2019
The Bourgogne Rouge is crisp, but quite generous. It comes from a plot of 60-year-old vines below Vosne-Romanee towards Nuits. This offers lovely, vivid, and pure red-berry fruit. It’s elegant, but also rather opulent and with lovely tension; a beautifully pure expression of pinot fruit. Still – and I don’t know why – I sort of prefer the Passetoutgrain…

Bruno Clavelier Vosne-Romanee Les Hautes de Beaux Monts 2019
The battle of the villages: Hautes de Beaux Monts is often the most expressive, and this holds true in 2019. The energy and sensual character of the vintage are second to none, and this is just downright sexy. As always, the Clavelier wines have ample acidity offering perfect balance to the rich, vivid fruit of the vintage. This is very good!
(Drink from 2030) – Very Good – (89-90p) – Tasted 10/02/2021 –
