About a Curve Ball and Episode 1
Beaune is actually a lovely place, but it will take quite a bit of work to make the Nuitons (inhabitants of Nuits-Saints-Georges) admit that they really enjoy Beaune.
Beaune is a beautiful small city of about 20000 inhabitants … enough to give many of the people in the service industry attitudes … mostly bad, but sometimes good … or at least I have heard.
The the least flattering part of Beaune is the Carnot strip which combines lacklustre service with often tedious or annoying products … adding bad design and a bit of that famous Beaunoise “charm”.
Place Carnot is truly beautiful even in wintertime. The trees and the buildings create an almost adventure-like scenery … lovely.
The adventure stops when you visit one of the bars on the Carnot Strip that covers the back corner of Place Carnot!
One would think that Burgundy, and Beaune in particular, would have some beautiful brasseries to display all the qualities of the region. Instead, we find these annoying places … why not give McDonald’s a chance with drinks sponsored by Château de Pommard?
Names like the 69 are just as disappointing as they sound … where is the class and style that the French possess? Do better!
The wines are often boring and uninventive, and it appears that the bars sell more beer than a stand at October Fest … and they attract all the nice salespeople from the big négociants entertaining Swedish clients to the drunk and horny winemaker from just south of Beaune … The 69 has all sorts of flavours.
At the two ends of the 69, we have the Stylish Swede and the somewhat Moody French – both having recommended restaurants of fame and character. The Bistro is a classical Brasserie run extremely professionally … flawless … so good that you can excuse everything else just to eat that freaking chicken.
And then, the Moody French – “His Cuisine” the man who sometimes transforms grumpiness into an art form… I adore him and the restaurant … we need people like him in this polished and edgeless world!
… the wine list in both places is great … reasonable priced wines can be found, but to call Bistro cheap would be almost as wrong as calling the Beaune strip classy and elegant.
The Beaune strip has its charms in each end of the 69…
