A rare and special Bernkasteler Doctor TBA 1959

Weingüter Wegeler is one of the proud owners of the unique Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard in Mosel.

Wegeler each year produce a lineup of spectacular wines from this fine and very mineralic vineyard located just above the village of Bernkastel.

The Doctor vineyard is in my view unique in both style and quality in the middle Mosel – only rivalled by the best plots in the core of Wehlener Sonnenuhr and then the mighty Scharzhofberger in the Saar.

On September 20th,2019 Weingüter Wegeler is selling a unique bottle of Bernkasteler Doctor on auction in Trier – at the annual event held by VDP.

The wine is a solitaire bottle of the very rare 1959 Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese, 700 ml. It is proven that the 1959 TBA exceeded 300 Oechsle must weight.

As a curiosum – the former United States President Dwight D. Eisenhower received a case of 1959 Doctor, supposedly TBA, in 1962 – see letter below.

The bottle auctioned is perfectly filled and has been tasted and recorked January 14th 2003. The last press review comes from 2010:

“Warm amber color. Exquisite bouquet with walnut, chestnut honey and cress. In the first instant it does not taste sweet, but tangy, slighlty malty and bitter sweet. The finish has a wonderful acidity, still very lively and surprising.” FINE – Das Weinmagazin 4/2010, Taster: Till Ehrlich.

It is one of four remaining original bottles in our library and it will be released with the label of our renown Vintage Collection.
