Georges Roumier – Producer Profile

Domaine Georges Roumier is one of the very best producers in Chambolle Musigny. Georges Roumier is producing a quite big selection of red Burgundies, from village Chambolle Musigny to Musigny Grand Cru – and all the wines are normally among the very best wines from the terroir.

Georges Roumier is one of the legendary produceres in Bourgogne, and have been one the very top producers for decades, and it’s hard to recall or even find evidence of a disappointing wine or vintage from this domaine.

I have followed the domaine quite closely since the 1999 vintage, and have tasted quite a lot of wines from the period after 1989 and the quality is consistently high and reflecting the quality of the individual vintage.

The style of Domaine George Romuier is rich and quite forward with a lovely expression of the terroir. The wines are concentrated and medium dark, without any hint of extraction. They drink quite well young and perform well for medium term drinking. But those who wait for full maturity are in for a huge treat, as the wines develop a lovely complexity after 15 to 20 years (village and 1er cru) and 20 to 25 years for Grand cru in a good vintage.

The most legendary wine from the domaine is the Bonnes Mares, made from both red and white soil on the Grand Cru Bonnes Mares. The combination of soil makes the most complex and interesting wine from this terroir. The Amuoureuses and and Musigny grand cru are very rare and great wines (have not tasted the Musigny from bottle yet) – and are among the top 5 wines from these vineyards.
