The Krug 2008 is a masterpiece, recalling legendary examples like the 1988 or further back the 1973, which were intense, but still refined, vintages of this magnificent Champagne. This is more delicate and refined than the 1988 – still a true food Champagne – yet still has that vintage’s vivid freshness. This is high acclaim indeed: the 1988 is one of my favourite vintages of recent decades, a year without the rich density – the Selosses-ness – that can be found in some big vintages. I like my Champagne vivid, fresh, and vibrant … where the mousse can actually make a dent in a soft hat. The ’08 can be drunk now, but will be better in ten years or more.

Steen, champagne now thats a vin de emotion wine especially Krug, More please. You asked your readers a while back what other region would we like you to review and you suggested Beaujolais. My response I’d rather drink beer. While that was a little cheeky. My almost 40 years of buying and cellaring wine I’ve never considered that region as a true cellar wine. But champagne nobody ever says no thank you. Keep up the good work. Yours truly from the Bering Sea Capt Bill

Hi Steen, we’ve never met, although I have been following you for a while, both as a lurker and as a subscriber (presently), in general I love your content, especially in depth coverage including viticulture of some of the leading growers.
I wonder if you went a bit overboard with this review, is the wine really so good, and what are your reference points? Would be good to know about the Champagnes you drink and like as at the moment this review is out of context and almost seems as if LVMH invited you to taste it, given that there were no reviews previously as far as I recall of Comtes 08, Cristal 08.
I would also say that from the Grande Marques, Roederer is perhaps more Winehog aligned as at least since 2012 they have been farming organically, which cannot be said for Krug. There are far more interesting Grower Champgnes out there than LVMH flagships.
Let’s also not forget that LVMH pretended that there was no Krug 08 and made everyone buy the 164 who wanted to get some of the 08 juice. Then no doubt the accountants did the sums on what could be done with the left over juice and there we have it…
Look forward to hearing back.
