Terroir Insight: Mugneret-Gibourg Clos de Vougeot

Clos de Vougeot has a magic ring to it, although some wines from this large vineyard could be described as rather indifferent; others even poor.

One wine which always shines, however, is the Mugneret-Gibourg example that has graced our palates for over 60 years.

The domaine’s current plot was acquired by Georges Mugneret in 1953, and the wine was sold under the Georges Mugneret name until 2009, when Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg was created by a fusion of two family estates: Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg and Domaine Georges Mugneret.

The story of the Mugneret-Gibourg Clos de Vougeot is, however, a bit more complex than usual, as it includes two different plots and a strong family desire to make and enjoy a good Clos Vougeot. (For those noting the seeming inconsistency in the preceding sentence, Clos de Vougeot is the vineyard, Clos Vougeot the wine.)

The Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg estate

The Mugneret-Gibourg estate was founded in 1933 after the 1928 marriage of Jeanne Gibourg (1906-1997) and André Mugneret (1905-1986). Andre Mugneret was a local chap, whereas Jeanne Gibourg was from Saône et Loire .

The couple had a son, Georges Mugneret (1929-1988), who was quite a Vougeot aficionado and who later restored the Mugneret-Gibourg presence as producer of Clos Vougeot.
