On my November trip to Burgundy I found a “new” and interesting name that I wanted to visit and explore further. The name is Jérôme Galeyrand – who is producing very interesting wines from a small location on N974 in Gevrey-Chambertin/Brochon.
I first tasted the wines of Jérôme Galeyrand at the Le Roi Chambertin in November – and was very excited indeed – and was lucky to arrange visit on my February trip.
Domaine Jérôme Galeyrand
The estate was started in 2002 by Jérôme Galeyrand, who comes from the Loire valley. He began his wine endeavours by helping Alain Burguet during the harvests in the 1990s.
In 2002 he bought his first vineyard – 0.05 ha of Les Retrait in Comblanchien – and made his first vinification. Since then Jérôme has expanded the estate that is now covering 5.25 ha.
He is mainly organic and on his way to a AB certification – so no pesticides here, and the vineyards are plowed. Some wines are including whole cluster, and the vinification is delicate – the use of SO2 is limited – also the contributing to the refined character of the wines. There is a cold prefermentation (13°C) in 3 – 5 days before the natural yeast fermentation starts.
The wines are refined, elegant and perfumed – wines that really makes a positive statement – in a delicate and rather discrete way.
A garage with a cellar ….
We had our difficulties in finding the cellar of Jérôme Galeyrand, but finally found the entrance in the back of a large garage building also including tractor service and other smaller businesses.
On the ground floor Jérôme have the winemaking facilities and bottling – and the top floor also include the office.
Below the style is more posh .. with a lovely relatively new cellar – made old style, here we tasted the 2018s from cask.
Quite a contrast between the two floors – that show – this is indeed work in progress and the wines are in focus. The old press in the chai underlines this .. and show that these are not technical wines – these are wines made with “selected” grapes and a strong passion.
