Domaine Leroy, Vosne Romanee 2004

By Steen Öhman March 14, 2012Leave a Comment

The Vosne Romanee 2004 from Leroy is not your everyday Vosne Village. This village wine comes from the Vosne vineyards Romanee Saint Vivant, Richebourg, Les Beaux Monts, Aux Brulees and Genevrieres. The result is a very good wine for the vintage. In the nose it’s oozing with Vosne spicyness, red fruits – strawberries and some notes of raspberries. On the palate it’s rich, subtle and with quite “fat” fruit for a 2004. The bouquet is dominated by red fruits – organic style. While the fruit is very good, the wine is not 100% focused and the terroir is somewhat undefined … as one would expect when mixing 5 different terroirs. Not quite as good as the exsample I had three month earlier – due to a very slight musty note in the finish. Still fresh, but don’t think it will improve with further cellaring.

  • Terroir Insight: Domaine Leroy Chambertin The Chambertin from Domaine Armand Rousseau is by many regarded as the king of Chambertin. There is however a queen of the Chambertin vineyard that to some degree can rival the king. In fact the queen seem to reign the hill at least regarding exclusivity and rarity. The queen is of cause Mme Bize-Leroy and the ...
  • Taking Burgundy to the next level – Domaine Leroy Viticulture The wines of Domaine Leroy are extraordinary in every sense of the word, and Mme Bize-Leroy has for decades been one of the leading and most progressive producers in the region. A lot of producers find inspiration to take their wines to another level by looking at the things Mme Bize-Leroy have done to improve quality. ...
  • Vineyard Insight: Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Laviéres There are a lot of interesting terroirs in the Vosne-Romanee appellation itself and in the twillight zone between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanee. This area is somewhat overlooked, but as the new generations of vignerons take on these terroirs, there are very fine wines to find from these vineyards. I have already covered the vineyards: Aux Réas Clos des Réas Aux Bas ...
  • Twilight Zone – Nuits-Saint-Georges Au Bas de Combe There are a lot of interesting terroirs in the Vosne-Romanee appellation itself and in the twilight zone between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Vosne-Romanee. • Terroir Insight: Domaine Leroy Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulées Most of the wines from Domaine Leroy are rare and elusive and one of the smallest cuvées is the Vosne-Romanee Aux Brulées made from a few tiny plots located on the border to the Leroy holdings in Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts. The border to the Leroy holdings in Beaux-Monts is in fact almost invisible … and ...
  • Terroir Insight: Domaine Leroy Musigny While the Musigny from Domaine Leroy is very rare and elusive it’s somehow a bit under the collectors radar – as the Musignys from de Vogüé and Mugnier are much more visible in the marketplace. Make no mistake however … the Musigny from Mme Bize-Leroy is just as exclusive as the other offerings from this fine ...
  • Vineyard Insight: Musigny – ownership maps Musigny is in my view one of the greatest Grand Crus in Burgundy rivalling at least some of the Grand Crus of Vosne-Romanee. While Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé is the dominant owner on Musigny with almost 70% of the vineyard, the rest of the vineyard is divided between 10 owners. The Musigny Grand Cru has ...
