I have tasted a lot of fine and great wines in 2014 … and it seems to be both impossible and unfair to pick one wine as the best of the year.
I do however feel that a few wines stand out …
The most surprising wine of 2014 was the Criots Batard-Montrachet 1989 from Domaine Hubert Lamy … a very special wine .. still crisp and surprisingly lightfooted for the the vintage. A rare treat to taste a wine like this.
The best mature wine tasted in 2014 was the 1993 Corton-Charlemagne from Coche-Dury … refinement beyond belief … a special and very delicate Charlie … the 1993 whites can be so refined and filigree – read the tasting note.
The most memorable red was the Musigny 1990 from Georges Roumier … a unique chance to taste this mighty wine … and at age 24 it’s not even close to be fully mature.
I have in addition to the above tasted a lot of cask samples, that deserves a mention – but since I only consider bottled wines for wine of the year … they will get a second chance when I hopefully taste them later on.
Nevertheless I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the producers I have visited and contacted during 2014 – without your help and hospitality there would be no blog, no articles and no Winehog.
Cheers and a Happy New Year
