I have the privilege of tasting wines from Comte Georges de Vogüé both before and after the malolatic fermentation and furthermore also after bottling in Denmark the year after.
This process is very interesting and educational, as this does show a lot regarding the development of the wines from cask.
In some year the wines are fairy easy to taste, whereas in others the wines can be extremely difficult to taste.
In 2017 I would say the wines was fairly difficult to deduct .. but nevertheless tastable ..
The 2017s at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé
The 2017 vintage at Vogüé comes after the frosted 2016 vintage, and is a mush larger vintage – Vogüé lost 70% of the harvest in 2016. The 2017 harvest are pretty normal quantity wise.
Vogüé has been very careful regarding the yields in 2017, as the vivacity in the vineyards was very strong after the frost in 2016.
To control the yields was extremely important, as this would ensure the quality in the areas hit by the frost in 2016 – and importantly doing so at a fairly early stage.
The harvest at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé
The yield at Vogëé were held at 30 – 35 hl/ha in 2017, so around normal although more than some of the limited years.
The harvest started relatively early on September 2. 2017.
Tasting Notes ….
Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Chambolle Musigny 2017
The Chambolle village is quite charming with a nice ripe sweetness – relatively red and dark fruit. Lovely coulis fruit – rather typical for the vintage. Lovely balance in this wine. Acidity is difficult to evaluate at this stage … before malo is complete.
(Drink from 2028) – Very Fine – (88 – 90p) – Tasted 01/06/2018

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Chambolle Musigny 1er cru 2017
The 1er cru – made from Musigny vines below 25 years – is quite a step up from the village and very expressive. Almost through malo – lovely charming bouquet – roses/peony rose, lovely vivid coulis fruit. Lovely fruit – notes of raspberries, blueberries and blackcurrant .. lovely vivid energy.
(Drink from 2030) – Fine – (92 – 93p) – Tasted 01/06/2018

Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé, Bonnes Mares 2017
The Bonnes Mares is more forward. Showing playful and vivacious fruit – lovely juicy fruit – zappy and energetic. Forward yet rather classic Bonnes Mares. Again this lovely summer like coulis fruit.
(Drink from 2036) – Very Fine – (93 – 95p) – Tasted 01/06/2018
Summing up the 2017s
The 2017s are pretty wines – at Vogöé and in Chambolle. The wines are vivid and lively and a showing beautifully – although it’s early in the cooled cellar of Vogüé.
It would be easy to confirm the expected … but to be honest I found the 2017s somewhat difficult to taste at this stage.
Especially the level of energy was difficult to evaluate, as the acidity also was a tad difficult to judge du to the malo.
So better to skip one or two wines … so this is what I did. I am however confident that the 2017s will show beautiful form when I return in November – presumably they are already there.
