In the coming weeks, I will have the pleasure of participating in and reporting from the harvest at Domaine Garcia in Nuits-Saint-Georges, producing, time permitting, a daily update.
Harvest at this estate is different from most of the rest of Burgundy, as the time-consuming baie-par-baie (hand-destemmed) vinification is one its of main techniques.
Day 2
September 18
A magnificent vineyard – Aux Saints Juliens
P.-O. Garcia has fine-tuned the Aux Saints Juliens’ viticulture, and the 2021 result is stunning: a very fine yield for the vintage with equally impressive quality.
Enjoy the photos!
Here is a good example of the grapes and their setting – airy and open, with a good distribution of clusters. De-leafing around the fruit helped with late maturity and disease prevention.
Next, a relatively unknown vineyard
The next stop was Nuits-Saint-Georges Aux Saints Jacques, located just above Les Herbues.
Again the quality was good, but not quite up to the Aux Saints Juliens standard. In general – and so far – P.-O. has been lucky with the four first vineyards harvested.
Some more impressions…
