Edouard Confuron – A Name to Remember

Vosne-Romanée is brimming with new names and talents. OK, that’s perhaps a bit on the overly-enthusiastic-journalist side, but new talents and domaines are actually turning up at a regular pace. This is good in a quiet place like Vosne.

Edouard Confuron (a part of the Confuron family) comes from the relatively low-profile Confuron-Gindre estate, which is located just below La Grande Rue, next to Domaine Meo-Camuzet. Edouard is working with his father, but is slowly – and successfully, to my mind at least – making his mark on the wines.

The relatively traditional style has been lightened, with less new oak, less sulphur during vinification, and more use of whole-cluster grapes. This is nothing magical or revolutionary. However, if the wines have been basically sound (grape-wise), then even modest changes can sometimes do wonders.

I’ll have more about Edouard Confuron himself after a later visit. But he is definitely a guy to follow – and quite a cheerful chap.

Domaine Confuron-Gindre Bourgogne 2020

Quite rich for its level, this shows vivid, lively fruit. Starting well, with lovely acidity and saltiness, it’s delightful. A few days of cold soaking pre-fermentation gives it a good head start.

Domaine Confuron-Gindre Vosne-Romanée 2020

Like many other Vosne estates, this comes from a cornucopia of small plots – in this case, ten different ones. Beautifully fresh fruit finds a nice balancing spark from the 20-25% whole-cluster vinification – airy and inspiring. While maybe not the most precise Vosne village, the question is: Is it fulfilling its purpose and giving hedonistic pleasure?

Domaine Confuron-Gindre Nuits-Saint-Georges 2020

This is made from vines older than 50 years in Aux Allots, Aux Herbues, and Aux Lavières. A bit of Nuits darkness, and the concentration of the vintage, is making this a slightly more serious wine – perhaps more than it should be. Good, but not a favourite choice of the ‘Hog.

Domaine Confuron-Gindre Gevrey-Chambertin 2020

The Gevrey-Chambertin is from two plots, one in Les Seuvrées and one in Les Crais, both below the main road. Lively – although slightly superficial – this is a wine with good energy from the 20% whole-cluster inclusion.
