Tastings are my inspiration, and my lust for exploring vineyards is often fuelled by these delightful experiences. Sometimes, they are relatively unknown terroirs, but most often, they have just been overlooked by the wine “litterature” and the Grand Cru focused consumers.
To say that Meursault Meix Chavaux is overlooked is not correct … however, the village lieu-dits never get the attention they deserve.
There are quite many prominent producers of Meursault Meix Chavaux … but no one stands stronger than Jean-Marc Roulot of Domaine Roulot … although its not even the top village of this fine Domaine.
But in recent years, the Meursault Meix Chavaux has thrilled my palate tremendously … and has become a favorite in my glass.

Almost all vineyard names has a mening … in this case the name is “Meix” that means a land around the house or the heart of the farm. “Chavaux” means a small valley before a river.
Not really sure that it catches the deeper meaning …
The terroir is oriented North-East, in the north of the village, near Auxey-Duresses. Calcareous clay in the lower part, rocky and less deep in the higher parts.

The vineyard spans 10.2558 ha and is located at 300-325 m altitude … i.e. around 75 m higher than the core of Meursault.
It’s one of the slightly more generous areas, but it seems that the phenolic ripeness has been spot on in recent years – at Roulot at least. Not 1er cru potential, but can definitely match the neighbouring Les Chevalieres and almost Les Tesson.
Clearly, the phenolics seem to hit their markers better than the plots higher on the slope these days … recent vintages from Roulot are spot on. Presumably, the water supply in the terrain is more ample than what one sees higher on the slope … hence less hydric stress … hence a bigger chance to get optimal phenolic ripeness.
Wines produced on Meursault Meix Chavaux
Meursault Meix Chavaux is a big vineyard with 43 plots, and hence, there are quite many owners … some are owners while others are renting plots and buying grapes.
It’s a big vineyard … with quite a lot of estates producing Meursault Meix Chavaux.

Looking at Cellar Tracker, we find the following wines … Please note that the MEURSAULT “LE CLOS DES MEIX CHAVAUX” owned by Domaine Francois Gaunaaux is not in the cellartracker list below …
Le Clos des Meix Chaveax is 3.47 ha and covers around 1/3 of the vineyard and is located in the lower southern end of the vineyard.

(Note: I use Cellar Tracker as a sampling tool, meaning it will often show most, if not all, of the wines produced from a terroir. It also shows the size of the individual production, meaning how large a share of the wines comes from the producer. These numbers can provide an indication, but not necessarily the full picture, as the number of vintages and other biases can influence the results significantly. At first glance, it can be used with some practice.)
The Wines of Meursault Meix Chavaux
I was inspired for this article by a Meix Chaveaux 2022 from Roulot … tasted last year at the estate in Meursault. Here are a couple of notes…
