Domaine Y. Clerget has gone from strength to strength over the last few years, really setting the bar high amongst Volnay and Pommard vignerons.
The estate’s Volnay Santenots 2020 really impressed me with its energy and verve – a magnificent wine.
Let’s take a quick look at the Clerget Santenots, just to know more!
(Terroir View is a lighter version of the Terroir Insight, and is based on the facts that not all domaines have a long history, and many terroirs in the Cote de Beaune don’t have a strong historic representation in the old books: Lavalle, Dangey & Aubertin, and Rodier.
So let’s go to Terroir View and take a quick look!
Volnay Santenots
Volnay Santenots is on the border between Meursault and Volnay, leading to the self-evident (?!) fact that a white Santenots is a Meursault and a red Santenots is a Volnay.
A white Meursault Santenots can be either a village or a 1er cru, depending on where the vines are within the terroir.
The top part of Volnay Santenots – Les Milieu – is usually considered the best, but I often find tremendous quality in the Dessous part of the terroir, despite its somewhat richer soil.
There are four lieux-dits in the Santenots vineyard: Les Santenots du Milieu, Volnay/Meursault Les Santenots Blancs, Les Santenots Les Plures, and finally Les Santenots Dessous.
Domaine Y. Clerget has two smaller plots in the Santenots Dessous part of the vineyard. They are located next to those of Domaine Georges Glantenay in the top part of the lieu-dit.
