One of the most controversial vineyards in Burgundy these years is Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges. By some seen as the best vineyard of the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, and a cadidate for promotion to grand cru .. others see it as a good 1er cru but perhaps not among the very top terroirs in Nuits-Saint-Georges.

While I don’t think it deserves a promotion to Grand Cru … just like most other top 1er crus in other appellations … I do find the terroir interesting and I have had some quite good wines from this vineyard … but I have yet to discover the magic of this terroir.
So lets take a closer look at Les Saint-Georges.
Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges the vineyard!
Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges is located in the southern end of the “main” NSG appellation .. i.e. between the Premeaux appellation, which also is a part of Nuits-Saint-Georges these days, and the city of Nuits-Saint-Georges.
It’s located just north of Les Didiers (Premeaux) and just south of Les Cailles and below Les Vaucrains and Chaines Carteaux – see map below.
The area of Les Saint-Georges is 7.4825 ha if one sums the area of the individual plots. Lavalle1 quote the area as 8 ha as does Rodier4 – wheras the area is 7.5365 ha in the 1861 classification2.
The historic ownership of Les Saint-Georges
The ownership of Les Saint-Georges is well documented in the usual sources, and so is the current ownership.
Lavalle1 (1855) mention the following owners of Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges:
- MM. Marey – 2.25 ha
- Duret – 1.70 ha
- Coirier
- De Lupe – 0.90 ha
- Marey-Monge (General) – 0.65 ha
Moving on to Danguy and Aubertin3 – they show an even more fragmented ownership picture:
- André (colonel)
- Faiveley-Bordeux
- Claude Gaguet
- Gautheret-Jouard
- Armand Gautheron
- L’Hospice de Nuits
- Mlle Jouard
- Emile Jouard
- Comte Liger-Belair
- Marey-Monge
- Mayol de Luppé
- de Morot de Grésigny
- Roux-Jouard
- Eugéne Sirugue
- Maurice Thomas
We see some of the current owners (Faiveley, Liger-Belair and L’hospices de Nuits) and what seems to be a further fragmentation of the 1855 ownership.
In Rodier4 1920 the number of owners is reduced somewhat.
