Sebastien Cathiard is really expanding his family domaine with vineyards in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits. His production has increased dramatically, and as a consequence, Sebastien has expanded the estate buildings accordingly.
It’s a huge expansion both under and above ground that gives him room to vinify and store the new wines. One could say that Sebastien was lucky this year, as his new structure was ready for the huge 2022 harvest.
The expansion will give more consumers the opportunity to experience the Cathiard style without breaking the bank.

Tasting the 2021s during elevage
I sadly did not taste Aux Reignots, Romanée Saint-Vivant, Les Suchots, or Vosne-Romanée En Orveaux due to low yields.
Domaine Cathiard Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2021
First the Bourgogne Pinot Noir, a fine generic Burgundy that in 2021 is cooler and lighter than usual. It is nonetheless vivid and quite intense for this level – and has the Cathiard feel.
(Drink from 2023) – Good+ (87p) – Tasted 05/11/2022 –
Domaine Cathiard Hautes Côtes de Nuits Village 2021
The latest addition to Cathiard’s Hautes Côtes de Nuits empire, these vines are located in Villers-la-Faye and were acquired in 2021. The wine has a fairly lively expression; not particularly precise, but with good energy and hedonistic qualities. I rather like this cuvee for its relatively relaxed expression.
(Drink from 2023) – Very Good (87-88p) – Tasted 05/11/2022 –
Domaine Cathiard Hautes Côtes de Nuits Village Aux Chaumes 2021
The Hautes Côtes de Nuits Aux Chaumes comes from a 1.35-hectare vineyard, another serious expansion of the estate. The vineyard has a high limestone content, with clay and stones, and while not as mineral-driven as the Dames Huguettes, this still has good structure well supported by the cool vintage.
(Drink from 2023) – Very Good (87-88p) – Tasted 05/11/2022 –
Domaine Cathiard Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Nuits Les Dames Huguettes 2021
The Hautes Côtes de Nuits is fairly new to my palate. Les Dames Huguettes comes from a vineyard with high limestone content and thin soil. It’s mineral and significantly more defined than the other wines in the Hautes Côtes line-up. A delightful offering from Cathiard.
(Drink from 2023) – Very Good (88p) – Tasted 05/11/2022 –
Domaine Cathiard Gevrey-Chambertin 2021
The Gevrey-Chambertin is a delightful greeting from this northern appellation, with its slightly sweet fruit. It’s lovely to see Cathiard reveal Gevrey. This has fine acidity and liveliness, with nice balance and generosity.
(Drink from 2028) – Very Good (89-90p) – Tasted 05/11/2022 –
Domaine Cathiard Vosne-Romanée 2021
The Vosne-Romanée from Cathiard is a classic, and one of my benchmark village wines. It has an ethereal feeling of effortlessness and cool delicacy. Precise for a blended village, this offers plenty of Vosne spices. It is certainly not bigger than the 2019 and the 2020, but oh, the delicacy!
(Drink from 2029) – Fine (91-92p) – Tasted 05/11/2022 –
Domaine Cathiard Chambolle-Musigny Clos de l’Orme 2021
Next up is the Chambolle-Musigny Clos de l’Orme from the center of the Chambolle appellation below Les Plantes. It’s floral and vivid, with both delicate and precise fruit. This is a delightful wine, with good Chambolle energy and vivacity.
(Drink from 2028) – Fine (90-92p) – Tasted 05/11/2022 –
