Visit Domaine Pierrick Bouley – tasting of the 2016 vintage

My second visit at Domaine Pierrick Bouley – after tasting the 2015s last year. I liked what I tasted from the 2015 vintage – so thought I would check out the 2016s also. I was not dissappointed – as Pierrick Bouley have produced some fresh and quite energetic wines in the 2016 vintage.

They are quite intense the 2016s – but do not match the cheer weight of the 2015s. This is “pro et contra” – I do think the 2015s will have the edge here in the long run.

Domaine Pierrick Bouley

Domaine Pierrick Bouley is an old family estate – as I understand it Pierrick Bouley represents the fifth genaration at the estate .. so a lot of heritage and knowledge about the wine making and the terroirs of Volnay.

Pierrick runs the estate with his parents … Pascal and Réyane Bouley – and the main market has so far been France – with quite a large share to private clients in France. This estate does however deserve the attention of collectors of Volnay all over the world.

The wines are mainly from the Volnay appellation – with the occasional wines from the surrounding appellations. As something new in 2016 Pierrick has produced a white Chassagne 1er cru ..and it appears that he also master the art of white Burgundies …

The Chassagne-Montrachet Abbaye de Morgeot 2016 is a lovely effort. The nose showed slightly reduced offering plenty of white orchard fruit – quite cool and infused with a lovely minerality. On the palate nicely balanced – fine acidity and quite elegant for a Morgeot side Chassagne. Fine+ (91 – 92p).

The style of the wines from Pierrick Bouley

Pierrick makes wine with a quite light hand – only little new oak, low extraction and a relatively low amount of SO2 – they are classic wines with a contemporary touch.

Pierrick seem to have found a lovely balance in the wines – as they are quite lightfooted and refined. The concentration is very fine .. so the wines are made to show the best side of the appellations.

As a note about the 2016s – the yields here were low again in 2016 due to the April frost – so not a lot of wine in 2016 either.
