Monday offered tastings of the 2014 vintage from three of my favorite Vosne-Romanee producers – Domaine Bizot, Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair and Domaine Cathiard.
The tastings confirmed the loverly drinkability of the 2014s … the quality is high and this vintage should not be forgotten in the midst of the 2015 hype.
Domaine Bizot
My first visit here but I have tasted quite a lot of wines from this very fine estate … from the 1997 vintage to 2013.
The 2014s confirmed my faith in this Domaine … Bizot produce some truly delightful wines in a style I personally adore. The 2014s are no exception, and accentuate that quality is improving even further these years at Domaine Bizot. Love the delicate fruit and the balance of the 2014s here.
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair 2014s
I have tasted most of the wines produced by Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, but this was the first time I sampled the 2014s.
The 2014s from Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair are gorgeous, and will provide a lot of good drinking over the next 20 years. The fruit in the 2014s is very pure, delicate and refined and the wines offer a loverly transparency and display of terroir.
The quality here continue to improve especially for the new wines – the Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Grandes Vignes is showing more and more definition and focus.
Domaine Cathiard 2014s
Sebastien Cathiard is in my view one of the most talented vignerons in Burgundy – and since he took over the domaine quality has improved significantly.
His 2013s were great from cask last year … and the 2014s are perhaps even more delightful. The oak is reduced further .. 50% in the village wines and 66% in the 1er and grand cru. Furthermore the toasting of the oak has been reduced further. The result is a delicacy and purity of the fruit rarely seen … gorgeous.
I adore the style of the wines … from the bourgogne rouge to the incredible sexy Romanee Saint-Vivant.
