Wine of the Month is a way of celebrating the wine in the glass. Each month I will find a lovely and gratifying wine – not the greatest, not the best … but a interesting and enjoyable wine on the day … or as Clive Coates so eloquently puts it – a wine worthy of being given an accolade.
Wine of the Month – June 2017
I have choosen a wine that have shown fine potential over the years – yet I did not expect it to unfold so much refinement and cool details as it did when I tasted it at the estate.
Served after Aux Reignots and Echezeaux 2010 it could have been mistaken for a 2010 – a large compliment for a 2009!
Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair, La Romanée 2009
The La Romanee 2009 has been backward and slightly grumpy since the bottling – but now it’s really starting to show. The nose is offering layers of red and dark fruit, a vibrant spiciness and a intense minerality. On the palate intense layers of fruit – generous and almost velvet before the intense minerality takes over in the long and intense finish. Will need to check on the other 2009s from the estate
(Drink from 2022) – Extraordinary – (97 – 98p) – Tasted 19/06/2017 at the estate.
